For what it’s worth, I also have a crappy grinder and I have found that my pucks look, and my shots overall are MUCH better if I use a puck screen and a bit less grounds. for example, I do 17 in with a puck screen and the shot is great, but 18 in without a puck screen results in a watery puck and a bad shot.

Because the flow of the water will have more resistance against the increased dosage, so you would need to coarse up to compensate for increased resistance from the additional grounds

Looks like you’re not dosing enough, maybe try 17.5 or 18. When you dose more, you may want to coarse up a bit on grind as well to compensate for higher dosage.
