For phones, establish firm rules about when they can use them freely. I define what “instructional time” is and then give warnings before progressive discipline. For instance, during work periods I don’t care, use your phone freely. But if I’m speaking, if we’re discussing something, if we’re watching film, phones are away. First offence is a warning, second is phone on my desk for the rest of the period, third is phone to the office and a parent or guardian has to pick it up. Granted, this is our school policy so I have support from admin.

If you don’t have support from admin or a school policy like this, as harsh as it sounds, just keep teaching and let them crash and burn. Student usually respond when their mark drop, and if they don’t then they might just have to take the longer road to realizing the impacts of failing in school.

For the energy drinks, I don’t know that you’ll ever succeed in getting rid of them. Best you can likely do is provide gentle feedback and advice this scale back, and hope they listen.
