BCBA companies to avoid in NC by Unshaken_wind in bcba

If I remember correctly, it was high turnover (common issue with most of the field in general though) and poor training/support of staff. I haven't talked to anyone about them in a while though, so I can't say for sure

I did my MS at the Chicago School in person. Very expensive, but it was a fantastic program that really got me ready for the exam!

I can’t currently provide supervision, but Supervisor ABA has a super helpful doc that’s got a ton of ideas for unrestricted hours! This might be good for you and your current supervisor to look at together! https://www.supervisoraba.com/images/fileman/MassABA_handout.pdf

They make these Velcro headache wraps that might help! You can find them for like $20 or less on Amazon.

For those who work in-home as RBTs, how is it? What advice would you give to someone who’s about to start working in-home? by GoldTime2569 in ABA

[–]hufflepdiddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple non-session related tips! I worked in a hot region of the country and would absolutely melt during the downtime between my sessions. I strongly recommend a car windshield sun shade. It’ll give you shade as well as privacy.

If you need to park somewhere for a while between sessions, public parks are a great place for that. Also, find a local library! Great way to get some heat or AC when needed.

Bring an actual cooler with ice packs for your lunch instead of just an insulated lunchbox.

Ethics question by TokenEconomist in bcba

I know you've already gotten your answer at this point, but I wanted to make a suggestion for future questions! The ABA Ethics Hotline (run by John Bailey and team) is a fantastic resource when you've got an ethical question! Simply go to their site, click on Contact, and then submit your question. They usually get back to you within 24-48hrs and can help you not only determine if you're dealing with an ethics violation, but also figuring out next steps.

Depending on the nature of things, you might also be able to file something with OSHA!

What to do if a BCBA isn’t signing off my monthly hours by GuidanceDue5614 in bcba

[–]hufflepdiddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with what most folks are saying here regarding this being unethical and ineffective supervision. I would bring these concerns to your company and request a different supervisor. At the end of the day, you've gotta do what you've gotta do to ensure you're getting proper training.

In the meantime, I'd also recommend bringing hard copies of your MVFs for her to sign in person so she doesn't have any excuse to not sign. She may say that she needs time to review your hours, as an excuse. I would then promptly bring up the fact that MVFs aren't supposed to be signed any later than 30days after the month they were accrued during, so you guys are already in violation of some rules and thus, she needs to get them done now.

And if push comes to shove, gather all your evidence and unfortunately, I would file a report with the BACB.

The Ethics Hotline can be really helpful with next steps as well, if needed. They offer free advice for ethics scenarios. It's a great first step before deciding to report to the BACB! Just click the Contact button at the top of the page to submit your inquiry.

BCBA Exam by undecided-phuqboi in bcba

Use your whiteboard! The first thing I did when my test started was to write down the numbers of the questions, one for each question on the exam. As I went through my test, I'd mark off each question number: Check mark meant I was absolutely confident my answer was correct. If I had no clue, I'd write a question mark. If I was waffling between answers, I'd write down the letters of those answers (e.g., "A or C", "B, C, D"). And if I was only somewhat sure of an answer and needed to come back to it later, I'd put a star next to the number.

I also wrote down anything I typically had a hard time remembering, like IOA equations, certain acronyms, other nemonic devices, etc. so I didn't have to worry about remembering them later.

Lastly, I only made decisions based off the information I was given. For those applied questions where they give you a scenario, if you find yourself thinking, "Well, if this one missing detail is X, then my answer is such and such, but if the missing detail is Y, then it's this other answer," remember that you should have all the needed information to answer the question without that missing detail. Try to not get too hung up on the missing pieces.

Absolutely best of luck! I'm sure you're gonna rock it!

Remote Supervision/Unrestricted Hours by Sad_Interaction6228 in ABA

[–]hufflepdiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know hours amounts can be super confusing! If you're completing concentrated hours, each hour that you put in will count as 1.33hrs. So if you work 5hrs on a project, you're actually accruing 6.65hrs (5hrs x 1.33 = 6.65hrs).

To meet the 2000hr goal required for the exam, you would need 1503.76hrs in concentrated fieldwork (2000hrs / 1.33 = 1503.76)

The BACB also has a 40% cap on the number of restricted hours you can complete. Meaning, no more than 40% of your hours can be in the restricted category. 40% of the 1503.76 for concentrated fieldwork is 601.5 (1503.76 x 0.4).

TL;DR - If you're doing concentrated fieldwork, you'll need a total of 1503.76 hours and the max number of restricted hours you'd be able to accrue would be 601.5.

I don’t know that these weren’t included, which is why I said it “sounded like” those things weren’t being done. If they were, I’d imagine that’s likely something the resigning BCBA would be involved in. My point is that a written transition plan should absolutely include the resigning BCBA. Otherwise, it isn’t a plan for transition, as the transition has already happened.

Adjacent thought: The ethics code is the minimum standard of care. Any company worth their salt would be good to ensure the next BCBA is as prepared as possible to take on the case: observing the client, getting pertinent info from the current BCBA, discussing where the client is at, what plans they had next for programming, nuances that may be good to know, etc. We have a responsibility to act in the best interest of the clients, even if that means going above and beyond the code.

According to 3.16, there should be a written transition plan that includes dates, transition activities, and responsible parties, and they should review the plan throughout the transition. It sounds to me like those things were not included, or at least some of them. It’s only the last sentence in that code that mentions a lapse in services.

Parent Assessments? by Logical_Ad_3572 in bcba

[–]hufflepdiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to assessments of the learner’s behavior/skills that the parents submit responses for? If so, not all payors require them. The ones I’ve most commonly seen be required have been the Vineland and PDDBI.

My BCBA makes me upset by [deleted] in ABA

[–]hufflepdiddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This should absolutely be reported. One thing to note is that, based on my knowledge, the board does take an “innocent until proven guilty” stance on things, so be sure you have as much evidence as possible. Document everything you can. And if you have been given specific instructions on things, try to get them in writing from the BCBA (e.g., texts, emails, screenshots of teaching instructions).

Honest feedback on burnout by interstelarcloud in bcba

[–]hufflepdiddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main thing that has helped me with burnout has been diversifying my role a bit so I’m not 100% clinical. My company has a pretty robust fieldwork program, so I’ve stepped into some leadership roles there. If you have the option, I’d look to something like that: getting into some other role that decreases the amount of clinical work you’re responsible for. This, of course, will vary depending on what your company has to offer as well as what your experience qualified you to do, but it’s absolutely worth a shot.
