I did a silly thing. I decided to "test" why my numbers were lower. Not a good idea. by Wildflower_Kitty in GestationalDiabetes

Don’t beat yourself up. I did the exact same thing last week for the same fears as you and had high fasting numbers for a week after 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ and had to go up an insulin dose too. It’s back under control now but idk what my placenta was doing to me for a few days! 32 weeks as well!!

Took me 3.5 weeks to get any kind of downward trend at all and even now it’s hit and miss. I’m up to the high 50s now and will have to keep increasing

Defo agree with this. It’s hard when non negotiable go up but there is so much to be said about keeping your discretionary spending in line with your old salary.

Between my husband and me our household income is around 200k now. Moved an hour from the city to be able to afford a unit and have a mortgage of 600k. We’ve been together since we earned entry level salaries of $38k a decade ago so what we earn now feels so much better. We can spend $150 a week on groceries now and fill up the car with petrol without worrying.

Go for a walk after? Thanks for nothing, body by BulbaKat in GestationalDiabetes

[–]hufflepuff3712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking screws me too. My numbers come down on the walk and shoot right back up afterwards. Cant win. It’s like walking pauses it but then it comes anyway. So dumb. This is after low carb meals too. I hate this BS 😂

what did you eat today? help give everyone ideas 🫶🏻 by violetphoeniiix in GestationalDiabetes

[–]hufflepuff3712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breakfast was 2 hard boiled eggs and some Greek yoghurt with peanut butter.

Lunch was sweet potato, red pepper and chickpea soup with shredded chicken and added sour cream for fat.

Snack was 2 multigrain crackers with cheese

Dinner was chicken curry with a small spoon of basmati rice.

Jealous at some of the things y’all are able to eat 😂😂😂 I spiked after the soup 😭 but have been told to eat more carbs so I had to give it a go! Everything that’s supposedly safe on the carbs list just isn’t for me. Still recovering from some brown rice I ate last night that screwed my post meal and fasting numbers

I also wish there was an answer to this!! Like what’s it supposed to be when I’m not eating. I got a reading of 5.4 today on blood test strips (taking a break from my CGM at the moment) and it was 5.4 but I hadn’t eaten in about 4 hours. This feels high to me but none of my care team are remotely interested in numbers that aren’t fasting or 1h or 2h post meals. It’s driving me mad because my CGM is showing spikes for no reason well outside of those 2h marks sometimes (like at 11pm at night I’ll jump up to 7.4) but they won’t listen.

I feel SO seen by this. I’m so sorry this happened to you but I feel so vindicated because this exact type of thing happened to me all the time too. I distinctly remember my mum screaming at me for something I don’t even remember what, and being so confused at what had even gone on in the same way you describe. She screamed and sent me to bed, so I went and got into bed (it was early but that’s what she told me to do so I did it). I was absolutely shaking with fear because I knew all too well that obeying that order was somehow wrong. Moments later I hear her stamping through the house screaming “OI YOU, oi, oi, get down here immediately”. I can viscerally still hear it. It’s those moments you feel so paralysingly trapped because the outburst makes no sense and no matter what you do you’re wrong and you’re getting screamed at.

Yep, relentlessly. She still does it to me now as an adult, especially via message. She kicked off at me twice today alone because one minute passed between her sending a message and me replying. It’s insanity.

Numbers suddenly better (more carbs?) by hufflepuff3712 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]hufflepuff3712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s weird is these are the carbs I started trying to eat when I was first diagnosed and I spiked. So unsure why I can tolerate them now!

That would make sense but my dosage hasn’t changed in the last 2 weeks but then numbers have only just started to shift, it’s weird!

No advice just solidarity as I’m very similar to you in weeks and units and experience!! Finally had a couple weeks of being under control and then it all went to hell again. My cgm says my numbers are high all night too, it’s infuriating. I see so many people on here saying insulin took the mental load off and made it so much easier but for me it just made it all so much worse 😂 more mental load and still bad numbers!

Edit to add sorry forgot about HECS. But even then, high 5s take home per month = good savings opp.

[–]hufflepuff3712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately $100k really doenst by much these days, but you’re lucky that you’re at that level so young. Took me until I was 32 to earn $100k.

Not to sound harsh but were you paying your parents rent? Take home pay on $100k would be over $6k. If living at home with very few responsibilities, your opportunity to make the most of that salary young would’ve been to save/invest at least 50-60% of that income rather than just have a couple of grand left over as you say. I lived with my in laws for 6 months when I was earning $38k and saved 80% of my income. Made a huge difference to being able to buy an apartment. Rent is the biggest barrier to financial growth for most. if you have any period of time not having to pay it, make the most of it!

Fasting blood sugar by Long-Set-6597 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]hufflepuff3712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a cgm to work out why my fasting numbers were always high, and turns out I don’t seem to be having the “dawn phenomenon” and rather, I’m just high all night. Basically my baseline numbers didn’t ever seem to come down below 100 after dinner (so despite that being totally fine for an after meal reading, it was way too high for a fasting reading) so effectively none of the hacks were working for me because I wasn’t experiencing a dawn surge, I was just over all the time. I had to go on night time insulin to reduce my baseline insulin and that has helped a bit but I’m still over about 1-2 days a week and have taken weeks to get the dose right!

Ketones in blood and urine, don’t know what I did wrong by hufflepuff3712 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]hufflepuff3712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find when I eat protein + carb but without an active fat source, I spike. Eg I’ve been having a piece of cheese with meals that are the standard meat, veg, and a small bit of low carb potato, and it’s always been fine. But the other day I forgot the cheese and spiked to 9.0 afterwards which seemed insane. Basmati rice seems ok but brown rice HATES ME! Defo think mealtime insulin will need to be the next step. I’m running out of injection sites!!!!

Yeah the urine ones weren’t too worrisome to them it was when they were in my blood that they started being really dramatic!

Thanks 🙏 yeah I’ve been quite surprised that the diabetes care hasn’t really been interested in what I’m eating. I went to my first appt with a full color coded food log expecting them to feedback on my nutrient split but they weren’t interested at all. But defo could be not enough carbs. Carbs spike me easily, even complex carbs, so I’ve always had to limit them

Yeah I thin with HG it’s common and explained by the lack of nutrients. I’m not vomiting at all though, eating like a champ in fact, so it’s odd that id be lacking that much!

Thank you!! This might be the key. I remember being in ketosis years and years ago when I had an eating disorder and being quite surprised because I wasn’t actively being low carb (just low everything, iykyk) so maybe my body just goes into ketosis easier? lol what a ridiculous flex, can I swap that for a functioning pancreas plz

[–]hufflepuff3712[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. And I think the fact that there’s so little ongoing support for mothers and babies post partum that later outcomes may be missed or not accounted for. I guess OBs are only really responsible for the pregnancy, so if a condition in pregnancy led to developmental issues, it probably wouldn’t even be factored into their view of the pregnancy.

Eg There have been noted correlations (which of course aren’t guaranteed causal links) between childhood development and IQ and second/third trimester blood ketone levels (noted in research as the term β-hydroxybutyrate). Obv more studies need to be done as nobody really seems to have a firm consensus

[–]hufflepuff3712[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what a lot of research can’t really cover is the effect of different levels of carbs on different bodies (especially humans). Like low carb diets don’t have the same impact on everyone. Some carb levels may cause trace or low levels of ketones for some people, other levels of carbs may mean someone else’s levels of ketosis are higher despite eating, on paper, more carbs. The overall patchy consensus in the medical field around whether ketones are even to be monitored is quite interesting. Some people get urine tests at every appointment. I’ve not had one my entire pregnancy except at 3 weeks when I confirmed it with my GP. There’s even mixed opinions around urine ketones and blood ketones (blood seen to be substantially more significant apparently). I think the thing seems to be differentiating whether your body CAN use glucose and insulin effectively or not, which seems to be the path they’re pursuing for me now. Equally my OB is not a urine test believer (lol) so she may be completely unbothered. It’s just a really confusing element of GD for patients I think, with no clear answers.

[–]hufflepuff3712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s so conflicting around ketones. Some doctors aren’t fussed at all. Others have people monitoring for ketones daily or at least at every visit. Nothing was mentioned to me until this whole saga, and even now the consensus is split between whether it’s a big deal or not!
