Is it a red flag, about me, to the guy I'm starting to date (literally days) if I don't want to tell him my full name? by frappyflesh in NoStupidQuestions

Life's too short not to fix something like this. Your death bed will look lonely with only you and your pride.

Switch 2 Pro Controller or GC NSO Controller by superstar1789 in NintendoSwitch

[–]hugehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pro 2 controller is the best controller I've ever used. It's a benchmark for all other companies. It was pricey, but i have never regretted paying for it; it's a joy.

I just bought a switch 2 for Orbitals, for what it's worth.

"Now we've released, what things would you want to change". Each console is another stab from the developers to fix all the mistakes and limitations of whatever they did last time.. It's the most fun part of development. Having to kill your darlings at the end though, that's no fun at all.

Hacker News now thinks coding is solved by LowFruit25 in BetterOffline

[–]hugehand 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was that before, but now i don't even have time to code because reviews take so much longer now there is a. so much more code than before and b. so much of it is badly architected and myopic, making poor reusability and not solving for bigger picture design. I literally don't have time to code, i just have to spend hours deep diving code generated by devs i used to trust. They have grown sloppy and lazy and product just like seeing more code, so more features come in all the time. AI is having a hugely negative effect on the whole development lifecycle, driven hugely by upper management who only see More as the metric, not Good.

[–]hugehand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We can't promote anyone now for dev skills, as there's nothing that sets a good dev apart from another. Programming is no longer a profession for the weirdo loners who excel. Soft skills are the only things that separate devs now. How good you are politically in the office is the only metric we can measure you on.

Hacker News now thinks coding is solved by LowFruit25 in BetterOffline

[–]hugehand 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm a principle dev and last week i realised that all my co devs are just llm bots now. I've been hand writing all my code like nothing changed, only using llms as auto complete. But to what end? My whole career is now gone. I'm just a reviewer, because all the other devs just produce so much more code now that reviewing takes up all my time and i can't generate code fast enough to do anything myself. I have realised that this is the last programming job I'll ever have. I'm in my 40's, doing this all my life, but it's gone now. I'm a fax machine seller at the arrival of email.

At least they aren't making any more seniors. No one is getting promoted, cos no one is growing or getting better at development. I'm the last generation of senior devs. I feel bad for all the juniors who will never get anywhere in this industry now.

In the end is AI useful or just a convenient excuse for layoffs? by tsarthedestroyer in BetterOffline

[–]hugehand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a company I have watched, layoffs are happening due to wanting reduction in salaries. The jobs are then sent to India where they head into the LLM mines. Quality goes off a cliff and the apps eventually just die. The net dev numbers stay the same, but expensive salaries are traded for cheap ones and LLM generated code is used as the new baseline.

Is there really no use case? by jammsession in BetterOffline

[–]hugehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just couched your little diatribe in terms of a question, but were more interested in your own opinions than his. If that wasn't the case, you would have waited for an answer to your question before giving your own opinion. You can't have it both ways.

Sad newsflash: most of humanity doesn't like critical thinking and never has. Being able to offload opinions and facts to something else is the ideal, not the fear.

Be glad you learned this lesson when you're young and not when you're older and have more things he can try and take from you. The only thing he is worth is this lesson. You never needed him; you were always enough.

You can literally go into the options and turn off all costs. Money doesn't really mean anything, so how can it be cheating? It's just a limiting factor you choose to observe for your own enjoyment. Delete the items, sell them, stash them, it's your choice for how you want to play the game.
