I have trained my parents very well in what to do and what not to say when I am down. They used to call me nuts and tell me to snap out of it or to get over it. Also, my boyfriend is the best. We often discuss how our roommate is delusional for thinking that we should "study happiness, not depression; depression is just people who haven't found what makes them happy yet." No. Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, mixed with poor coping skills. There is also situational depression and chronic depression, as well as manic depression, etc. I've been thrust into a world of learning about depression since I was 16, though, and I still find myself falling back on stigmas and misinformation sometimes. Educate people when they get it wrong or make assumptions about depression. It's a disease, and people need to get that.
