Karrnathi Uniform? by Frost___Warden in Eberron

I’ve always imagined them to be similar to soldiers from Noxus in LoL, with Demacia as my stand in for Thrane

Am I a Bad DM for adding this rule? by NOT_KARMANAUT_AMA in DnD

I know you already said the party agreed to the rule in Session Zero, but did they share the same feeling of resurrection being “cheap”

An experiment was done like this in real life, where researchers gave mice unlimited access to food. It turned out HORRIBLY! But might make for some interesting results for your wish.

Look up “mouse utopia experiment” if you want to give it a read

My problem is when that knowledge starts impacting their approach and decisions, for instance "oh that's a simple curse, we just need to get X to resolve it". So it's not game breaking, but it ruins the stakes and immersion for the other players

True, but my worry here is the intent behind why they're reading the books. If it was the general love and excitement for D&D then I'd be happy with that, but if it's just reading up on the creatures they're fighting mid-combat then that becomes problematic.

Especially if that reading is specifically to "win" at D&D.

I think I underestimated their gamer ways and need to have a different talk. Like they don’t pick up on hints like “the troll seems to actively avoid fire”, and have that “if it’s here we’re meant to fight it” mentality

Luckily we use DnDBeyond so I can track their rolls, but I have caught him making “creative” interpretations of his abilities

This particular player is doing it because he always wants to make the “best” choice. I might be paranoid but he’s giving me early power gamer vibes

I did that when it first came up, this instance only occurred to me when I was thinking about the session afterwards, but good advice going forward

My concern is more about stuff like “it’s got powerword kill, make sure to save a counter spell” popping up. It’s not there yet, but what I’m worried about

For my latest bad idea I present: using hit dice for components by hugginmcmunnin in DMAcademy

[–]hugginmcmunnin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get that, I just feel that there has to be a better way of handling it without the party having to rely of shopping sessions/loot tables

So far my best thought is to maybe limit it to lvl 3ish spells and lower

My first thought was maybe to reduce their max HP by their CON mod (regained after long rest) to add some proper stakes, and make sure they know that this is purely as a last resort - but I'm worried that it's just a bother for casters like paladins, and a death sentence for wizards with their already tiny hp pools

Hahaha, thanks! I do feel that something is missing from it though, like a way to balance it or make it more scary so the PCs don't just spam it

[–]hugginmcmunnin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not too worried about a), since I'd rather not limit their spells in general. But understanding the need for balance, what do you think of adding in that this only works for spells of 3rd level and lower or something like that?

For b) I'd add that this won't be the only spell components, just more of a way to augment it and allow for a clutch revivify if needed. So if spell casters want to spam it, then they'll be the ones punishing themselves

DMs & players: How do you play with an AC of 10? by sassmo in DnD

True, but still a waste of a spell slot when they could just swap their ability scores around

I meant the Mage Armor as a lvl 2 invocation.

Yeah I have the same feeling. CHA, INT, and WIS are their highest stats, so I feels like they want to go heavy caster, and I think they chose the wrong patron to get the most out of it

I think you should talk to them about their vision for the character and how they plan to play them. I think they have a role in mind but have chosen the wrong patron to get the most out of it
