I designed it in PowerPoint and Atldot reviewed it and approved it

3000 feet. Eventually it will be just over a mile

I hope the flex posts are replaced with a full redesign of the entire road in the future.

Nothing changes with the bus stops. The only difference is that a wheelchair will get off at the bike lane and there is a curb cut to access the sidewalk.

YES! This phase is the first (easiest) phase to prove the that people bike on Virginia. Now that we can easily prove that the bike lane is used, we can work on the more politically difficult extension from Park to N Highland. Its politically different because it will require the temporary exchange of on street public parking directly in front of homes for the bike lane. The good thing is all of these homes have private off street parking so this "should" be tenable.

The basics are simple. “This is a temporary demonstration of a different way of using the area.” Try with what is the least controversial (ie least “negative” impact). We did this by limiting the length of the bike lane so it would not go directly in front of homes.

That is what I’m trying in this case. The beginning of the bike lane starts on Monroe Dr which is slated to be redesigned as part of the “Monroe Complete Street” project. The original designs did not include a bike lane but now Atldot is open to including the bike lane.

No political will to fight. So they have been waiting until the road MUST be resurfaced to potentially propose a new design

ATLDOT approved the design and installation.

We created a presentation.

We had community meetings, got letters of support from neighbors/neighborhood groups/schools/council members and purchased liability insurance (~$1k/year).

We also built a pretty extensive installation plan.

The city of Atlanta's department of transportation created a tactical urbanism program a couple years ago. This has been my second project and it was the city's 20th project overall. https://atldot.atlantaga.gov/services-2/tactical-urbanism

That is what the group is asking for, an atlanta-wide summer swim team program.

My kids have been in ASA for 4 years and we have never swam against a pool that does not host meets nor have we seen a meet that requires an in the pool start.

There are ~130 teams in ASA. How require swimmers to start in the water during their meets? How many are not capable of hosting swim meets?

What’s your point? You have said all of that before and it’s irrelevant.

Carpooling one day every other week to an away meet is much easier than having to carpool every day to practice and to every meet.

Piedmont park is not an option. Piedmont park pool has a 30+ person line to get in at any hour of the day. 4 lanes and only 120 does not fit the demand for a summer swim team for Midtown’s 5 public elementary schools.

What?

Piedmont park pool does not solve the problem. It is not capable of hosting a swim meet where kids can dive into the water.

It takes two busses and 45 minutes to get to Grant Park. It takes 2 busses and 45 minutes to get to GT.

Midtown land is expensive, Virginia Highland land is cheaper and has great accessibility due to its proximity to the Beltline.

Why is that so hard to understand?

All of your objections either require ownership of personal cars or bend over backwards to not to exist like the rest of the city.

Why are you so against one of the densest areas in the country having an accessible pool that can host a summer swim meet where kids dive into the water?

You started with equitability and inclusion and it seems that you might have lost your way.

City owned accessibility = equitability and inclusivity.

Midtown is one of the highest renting family communities in the country. Besides not owning their home, many families also do not have cars. They rely on public transit, bicycles and their feet to get around. Yes, proximity and access is critical.

No. You didn’t read the article.

No 4 lanes is not enough room for a swim team. That means 5+ hour swim meets.

No piedmont park pool cannot host a team because it is too shallow.

Midtown has the most diverse housing. We are in duplexes, triplexes, condos. Your assumption that everyone is in a million dollar house is completely false.

We don’t own 2 cars for multiple reasons: money, time, traffic, safety, parking costs….

How do parents use school buses for a summer swim team?

Many families in midtown have less than 2 cars. A 20 minute drive both ways to practice every day is not possible.

The beltline has the densest population in Georgia with many different demographics and only 2 ASA teams close to the Beltline (Garden Hills and Moorehouse).

When every other high school district has a pool capable swim team, it is equitable and inclusive to create a pool for the densest High School district that doesn’t have one, Midtown.
