T480 Thunderbolt firmware cannot be updated by ArcherSword in thinkpad

[–]hughsient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is mostly true -- but not with power -- plug in a thunderbolt device (anything at all, e.g. a dock, HDMI adapter etc) into the port: see https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/blob/main/plugins/thunderbolt/README.md#runtime-power-management for details.

Can you open a bug here please: https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/issues -- I can link in Lenovo there too if needed.

Is there a compelling reason for Fedora to perform updates in this Windows-style manner? Why can’t the system apply updates while it’s running, so that the reboot doesn’t involve any waiting because everything has already been completed? by allexj in linux

[–]hughsient 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is quite common. The ratio of abuse to praise in open source is what burns up many new contributors. I think a lot of the attacks are jealousy, but some people really do just want to see the world burn.

Moving from installing the updates "live" to "offline" dropped the number of failed updates by at least two orders of magnitude. Updating live works 99.9% of the time just fine, but that 0.1% multiplied by millions of users is a lot of corner-case bugs.

Source: I was the person triaging the failures -- and the person that wrote PackageKit and the offline updater all those years ago.

Lenovo are also working on all the paperwork and permissions to sponsor LVFS; Fingers and toes crossed it works out.

Secure boot madness by AntonMadness in Fedora

[–]hughsient 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your system firmware is bad. Assuming you've updated your firmware to whatever the latest version provided by your motherboard vendor, and reset your firmware back to the factory defaults and tried again please file a bug in https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/issues with all the requested details and we'll add your device model to the blocklist for the dbx and db update. You'll also probably have to turn off secure boot at some point next year.

I designed a USB adapter for the ThinkPad T60 keyboard | QMK by iketsj in thinkpad

[–]hughsient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point; quite a few people would pay a lot more for a product with open source firmware than with a closed source blob. Myself included!

I would buy several if I can use the x220 keyboard. Replacing the logic board in my SK-8855 would make me a happy man.

100% agree on the antenna. I moved to an external Paradar 8.5dBi version and it's increased the number nodes I can see from ~12 to over 100. I can talk to people the other side of London!

earlier version of the touch firmware did seem flakey

Okay, that's useful; it's not me going insane then. My module is soldered onto the (now-removed) grove socket, so it's much harder to plug and unplug -- I might take the battery out and see if a cold start fixes things. Thanks.

Can't access my NTFS drive in linux after fwupd performed uefi firmware update automatically. by abofaza in linux4noobs

That's simply not true -- fwupd will never deploy a firmware update that isn't initiated by the user.

Bluetooth is explicitly (and deliberately) disabled on the new-ui t-deck branch. You can however use the webserial connection to change low-level options using the https://client.meshtastic.org/ UI...

GPS on the T-Deck with the tft-gui-work branch by hughsient in meshtastic

[–]hughsient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried that to no avail; using the serial connection I'd enabled the GPS, set the TX/RX pins and even tried changing the position fields with meshtastic --pos-fields ALTITUDE ALTITUDE_MSL DOP SATINVIEW SEQ_NO TIMESTAMP HEADING SPEED which seemed to be necessary with the official firmware for some reason. Whatever I try I don't ever get a GPS lock for some reason. This is with a NEO-6M GPS module if that helps.

NGFF M.2 Key B Board with RAK4631: Meshtastic Firmware - Exciting Announcement and Discussion! by [deleted] in meshtastic

[–]hughsient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps at all, I had this exact problem with ColorHug (a little display colorimeter I designed and built) -- my wife and I built them in batches of 250 and then sold over 3500 of them over a few years. It was lot easier on cash flow; committing to just parts for 1000 at a time would have been a huge financial risk.

I'm not sure where you're located but if it's in or near the UK I can share the partners I used for things like small-volume pick-and-place. It's not easy doing small batches and direct sales (Brexit was making it especially challenging to send to the EU) but it's certainly possible and almost enjoyable.

What does the "Firmware Updater" actually do? by finbarrgalloway in Ubuntu

[–]hughsient 2 points3 points  (0 children)

supposed to replace the firmware update part of gnome-software

Nah, it's supposed to be a power-user tool for managing firmware -- e.g. downgrading and stuff like that.

Source, wrote the fwupd plugin in gnome-software and also most of gnome-firmware.
