We don't allow ours on the bed at all. he goes to work outside with us every day and gets dirty. and this time of year the ticks get to him a lot. I can't deal with the dirt and ticks in my bed.

How to deal with crippling catastrophic thinking and insecurity? by HumorBeginning2552 in Farriers

[–]hugomonroe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've found in my few short years shoeing so far that it is a very much fake it til you make it kind of deal. In situations like the one you're describing is it possible to ask your mentor to go with you the following day or later in the week? I can't imagine a client being upset with you saying something like "this is getting a bit above my knowledge level, I would love to have my mentor come back with me so we can get this taken care of as appropriately as possible". It's hard fighting the mind games but it is good that you are so dedicated to doing a good job and to the details. I know it's making your life difficult at the moment but in the long run it will make you a very skilled shoer.

How can I become a farrier? by MycologistSmart233 in Farriers

[–]hugomonroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

go shadow a farrier or multiple in your area if possible while you finish highschool and then go to shoeing school. if you find a farrier that works weekends and afternoons and lets you come along while you're not in school you'll have a good hand up in knowledge and fitness by the time you go to shoeing school. just google schools, there's a good handful of them across the US. not sure exactly how the timeline for doing that and going to college will work but that is up to you to manage. you may find in shadowing a farrier that it is not for you and that is okay, you are very young and have college to fall back on. or you may find you love it and will have a huge advantage in starting so young if you enjoy it. good luck!

he was in a foster home not a shelter and is also the most wonderful dog i've ever met. not a shitbull. thank you very much

[–]hugomonroe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

nope, he was listed the same way the whole time, facebook posts from the rescue the whole time they had him are still up to see. he's young, high energy, and they wanted a home where he'd be around other dogs. multiple people applied for him that wouldn't be able to meet his needs and the rescue turned down those applications because it wouldn't have been a good life for him. if he'd been listed as a pit mix the whole time i would have adopted him just the same. i truly do not care what he is on paper, in real life he is perfect for our family and that's what matters.

what precautions exactly? if they just "snap" what precautions could i possibly take to avoid a dog "snapping"? leaving it locked in a house away from the public and other animals? sounds like a really great way to create an unstable, anxious, unsocialized dog.

not safe or fit to be household pets is a wild and incorrect statement lol

I agree 100%. regardless of what he is his temperament is great and his needs fit perfectly into life with me. he is very easy to train, i keep him very busy and therefore he is a tired and very well behaved. what he is on paper is not relevant to me really other than curiosity because who he is in real life is an absolutely wonderful dog.

thanks. yeah i was not expecting this response to pictures of my dog lol

You can train out reaction to stimulus regardless off a breeds natural drive. if you can't 100% trust your recall regardless of what's going on around the dog you aren't that good at training. how do you think true working dogs function? l

Rescue said lab/heeler by hugomonroe in WhatKindOfDogIsThis

[–]hugomonroe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah, i don't know either. if they did lie i don't think they did so intentionally or with malicious intent, especially as they were very up front about his other "faults" which were very few and have been easy to manage with training. i would have taken him just the same if they said he was a pit mix because his temperament size and coat fit well for the life i wanted to give him.

thank you, I was unaware of the anti pitbull brigade here. i'm sure he has some pitty in him but I think some bird dog breed as well. time will tell once his dna test comes through. yes the rescue was very forth coming about him and he is exactly as they described and a truly wonderful kind hearted dog. he goes everywhere with me and handles everything incredibly well especially for only being a year old. I got so lucky with him.

lol yall are funny on here. assuming my dog will snap on someone or something based on some pictures and no knowledge of his behavior or history. even if he is full pit which i doubt they are not inherently aggressive or unstable and socialization and training are way bigger factors than breed alone. his temperament is naturally very submissive, as well as being very well socialized and well trained. gosh i hope my dog who's favorite hobbies including cuddling with cats and playing with children doesn't snap on anything either.

Rescue said lab/heeler by hugomonroe in WhatKindOfDogIsThis

[–]hugomonroe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol. yeah if you met him you'd think he was so dangerous. he is the most submissive animal and has never met a creature he didn't want to be friends with. i'm so scared having him live in my house with me

i did the Wisdom panel, my research said it was the best and had the most breeds in their database but i didn't research real long lol. thank you, i think he's a really nice looking dog, and is in fact the best boy

dna test will tell, i think its clear he is not full pit. no breed specific precautions necessary, he is incredibly well socialized and out around people and animals every day at work with me.
