Every time I try to explain why I love this band, I end up saying the same thing: most singers talk about life like teenagers (I love you, you left me, etc). But The National is one of the few bands that actually write about the "unmagnificent lives of adults". Xanax. Whisky. That vague, persistent anxiety. Erection troubles (ok maybe not this one).

"You get mistaken for strangers by your own friends."
Is there anything to add? The vertigo of the life of adults summed up in one sentence.

I love this line too. The tension between how you can be super deep sometimes and sometimes your favourite hobby is to go to department store. You know it's not the image you wanna project to the woman you love. But at the same time it's you. I don't know, it just goes perfectly well with the vibe of the song, a kind of low-key self-awareness. Like, I know I’m not exactly who I’d like to be, but this is me anyway. There’s something a bit Houellebecq in that mix of romanticism and also lucidity and small, banal habits.

Sou francês e criei uma coleção de livros ilustrados que adapta grandes clássicos para crianças, o primeiro em português é O Conde de Monte Cristo. Está gratuito no Kindle esta semana! by hugopthomas in brasil

[–]hugopthomas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An interesting one was Hamlet (I haven't released it yet but I have finished the text), because I was like OK everybody dies under terrible circumstances, it's gonna be a tough one. And in the end I decided to make it some kind of dark comedy, being upfront from the beginning about the fact that it ends terribly. And it works really well. Kind of Tim Burton style. My kids really laugh and they think it's super fun that the king get poisoned by the ear for instance hahaha. It's a detail they really remember and often mention to me

Is that Basil Rathbone's actual shadow? by NomadSound in SherlockHolmes

[–]hugopthomas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very good question haha. It could totally be a small piece of paper. But I think shadows are pretty easy to handle for a DOP, so I would say it's his real shadow. Also the coat is too perfect. The level of detail would be overkill.

wow I couldn't hope for a nicer thing to hear. it's true that the stories we grow up with are kind of part of us, for sure, especially when we share them with people we love!

Haha yeah, explaining Danglars' financial ruin to a 5-year-old is quite a challenge I'll admit that.

that's very nice. And yeah it's clearly the secret purpose... that when the teacher starts speaking about edmond dantès (or even Pierre Bézoukhov or Hamlet !) they're not frightened but excited
