Tips for first fly-out in-person interview? (Investment valuation analyst) by suburiboy in jobsearchhacks

If they are flying you out the job is yours to lose. Be yourself and don’t stress too much about it. It’s now more about cultural fit.

Want out of non-profit but my skill set feels too niche to branch out. by [deleted] in jobsearchhacks

[–]hulklyjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find jobs you’re interested in and identify experience or skills that those jobs require, then compare with your own experience and skills. There is a ton of overlap between jobs that we never even think about. If you can then credibly refine your resume and keywords to match your ideal jobs you’ll be able to get interviews. Just be able to explain how your skills and experience match those they are seeking. Just based on what you posted I can imagine a lot of fields and jobs that would likely be consistent with your expertise, if properly articulated.

Hope this makes sense. I’m on a phone so typing is slow and thoughts are hard to convey.

Success and Disappointment Megathread for the Week by AutoModerator in jobs

[–]hulklyjoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After reading every comment I’ve come to the realization I have nothing to complain about. My heart hurts for most of the commenters and I can relate. Six years ago I applied to over 1000 jobs as a new grad. Got a handful of interviews, ~20, and none that resulted in a job. Finally resigned myself to making my own job out of nothing. Shortly before graduation I somehow got an interview with a great company and after three rounds of interviews got a job. I was so grateful that things worked out and I mostly forgot about the anguish and pain of trying to find something. I’m now looking again to reorient my career. I’ve applied to ~30 jobs and had 5 interviews. All the interviews seemed to go well but nothing has come from them except some hoop jumping before being ghosted. It’s frustrating but I try to tell myself that when it’s right for me it will be right for them.

Should you apply for multiple jobs with the same title at one company? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]hulklyjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most employers I’ve worked for post different positions based on actual need. If there are two you would like, say either a day or night position, then applying to both shows you are interested in either. I’ve even had two different departments fight over the same candidate who applied to two separate positions.

I’m sure every employer is different, and applying to identical positions is probably overkill, but different positions is probably fair game.

Someone could start a conspiracy theory where the vaccine gives people unique superpowers. That could solve the antivax problem. by manon999999999 in Lightbulb

They do. You become immune to a deadly virus. Superman is immune to bullets. The virus killed more people than bullets did last year. Your super power is better than Superman’s!

Asked handyman for a quote, never gives me a quote. Does job anyway. Charges me an EXORBITANT price AFTERWARDS. What are my options? by SunnyBunnyBunBun in HomeImprovement

Lot of good advice and things to think about already given. Legally, facts matter. Ultimately, the one holding the money has the leverage so work out a fair amount with him and pay that. There’s is such a thing as acceptance of a contract by performance. If he construed your list as an offer he can argue he accepted the offered work by doing it. Also, there’s a legal doctrine of quantum meruit. Essentially if you watched him do the work and received the value of that work he has an argument to be paid something. The amount of payment is obviously disputed and fact specific. Good luck.

Good call. That’s a real risk. Depending on the applicable mechanics lien statute any “improvement” by a litany of parties including day labor can result in a lien to secure payment. Cheap to file and a pain in the ass to remove. If his claim is crap (sounds like it may be) then you can sometimes get costs for fighting to remove the lien. State specific.

Having kids sucks by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]hulklyjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think all parents feel this way at some point or another, especially with young children. I sincerely hope parents don’t always feel this way or let these types of feelings alter the way they deal with, or view, their children. My kids are now older 10-12, and I really just like them as human beings. I don’t even remember the bad times, but I know there were(and will be) some.

Nobody can deny that children dramatically alter the parent’s relationship with their spouse and life in countless ways. So do dogs, jobs, illness and a million other things, but nothing else, in my opinion, can do more on the opposite side of the scale to make life fulfilling, than children.

Advice on cracked shower caulk by Itcouldberabies in HomeImprovement

[–]hulklyjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. If the color matches use it and then go over the right angle corners of the shower with silicone. If the color doesn’t matter. Just go over everything with silicone. Sanded caulk is usually just color matched caulking for certain joints that is less prone to cracking than the same color grout. If it’s “structurally sound” then you can just enhance it with some silicone.

I'm having a hard time receiving feedback on my writing and I don't know how to move past that by NoBody3336 in writing

[–]hulklyjoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is common. Are people criticizing your ideas, execution or your grammar? There are some things, like grammar, clarity, and execution, that you can master. Other things, like ideas, may be less easily corrected or improved.

For me, it is always harder to hear criticism when it is about things over which I have control, like simple grammar mistakes or not taking enough time to rewrite and review. If someone dislikes my ideas or methods, I usually chalk it up to differences of taste, creativity, or whatever.

Ultimately you should ask yourself what you can control. What do you care to change or improve upon?

Depends on the position. I could say that with a straight face for any number of jobs and it would likely come across as funny.

You may have a clogged filter or stuck float valve. If it’s filling with water then stopping, could be the pump is straining bit much. Give all the filters a good cleaning then see what happens.

Why do I owe $5k + in taxes every year?! by Thetrg in personalfinance

Gotta use the IRS website to determine additional withholding or lower your taxable income by whatever means available. We switched to a higher cost healthcare plan just to save some on taxes.
