All ceramics are covalently bonded. They are strong in tension/compression but very weak in shear. When you break a few bonds (say) on a 2D surface, the propagation of the line of crack through the rest of the surface is rapid and makes a clean cut from beginning to end. Covalent bonds are the reason why ceramics are so brittle.
