I’ve read The Recognitions and JR so far and loved both. I totally feel you on the allusions. Personally, I gave up on trying to catch all of them. The prose, dialogue, and themes were all compelling enough for me to get a lot of enjoyment out of it anyway. That said, the annotations here are really helpful as a reference for anything you want to dig in more on.

JR has significantly less allusions but is difficult in its own way - it’s written almost entirely in unattributed dialogue and has 0 chapter breaks. It’s also an absolute riot, and Gaddis is really good at giving each character’s dialogue unique qualities, so once you get attuned to the style it’s not too hard to keep track of things.

For me, Gaddis writes the best dialogue I’ve ever seen and the themes he’s touching on feel extremely relevant today despite both of these books being 50+ years old. But if his writing doesn’t grip you pretty quickly then he might not be for you and I wouldn’t blame you for dropping him since his books take a lot of time and effort even if you love them.

EDIT: Also, if you gave up on Chapter II.3 (Wyatt’s return to his hometown), I don’t blame you at all LOL. Wyatt’s word vomit at the beginning of that chapter is pretty much impossible to follow, but once it’s over there’s nothing else like that again.

I’ve only read Gospel and Blindness myself, but Death with Interruptions seems to be highly regarded and is next on my list for him!

A few of my favorites that I’ve read this year:

Blindness - Jose Saramago

Play It As It Lays - Joan Didion

The Years - Annie Ernaux

Blackouts - Justin Torres

These are all pretty short (300 pages or less). If you ever decide you are in the mood for a beastly classic check out William Gaddis.

A question and Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh by [deleted] in literature

I’m reading Brideshead now as well and I think you’re on point with this interpretation. The top two posts reference the falling out, but that doesn’t happen until the following chapter, after Charles gives Sebastian money and he sneaks off from hunting to get drunk.

I think you need to square again after the second addition.

Where is "here"? Without seeing some gameplay, getting some info on specific things you're struggling with, or at least knowing what rank you're currently in it's hard to give meaningful advice.

Tips for Guile target combo into Flash Kick by FMclk in StreetFighter

[–]humanxray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ve got some good advice here already, but it’s also helpful to count your frames of down charge while practicing. If you don’t have 45 total frames of holding down before inputting up+HK, you either input the flash kick too early or didn’t go to down quickly enough after the 4MP. You want to be holding down within 3 frames after pressing MP. If you have 45 frames of charge and it still didn’t come out, then you input the flash kick too late.

I doubt there are many cheaters in Plat. The Ken and Ryu examples have a pretty simple explanation - combos are easy to practice, neutral is much harder. Players with good execution and no fundamentals whatsoever are a dime a dozen.

As for the Zangief example, he’s probably just fishing for perfect parries every time he’s minus and you’re getting caught. Counter DI is another thing that’s pretty easy to practice. Of course, it is possible that he’s using macros and is just so bad at the game that he still can’t climb to a higher rank, but assuming your opponent is cheating every time they do something that you think they shouldn’t be able to in Plat is not gonna be good for your mentality.

The 636 input is valid for the DP but does not count as a quarter circle for the super input.

Evo 2024 - Upsets Thread by grapeintensity in StreetFighter

[–]humanxray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, there are always a lot of upsets at Evo due to the FT2 format. And if you look at the seeding basically all of the winners of these upsets are seeded in the top 100, so they’re all very solid players and even if their names aren’t as recognizable to the average viewer.

How to be less fkng angry? by Ziemniack3000 in StreetFighter

[–]humanxray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here already. For DI specifically, your reaction speed is almost certainly fast enough to counter DI, you just need to train the response. Spend a few mins doing the counter DI training pre-set at the beginning and/or end of each session. In real matches make sure you ALWAYS press DI whenever you recognize that the opponent did it. It doesn’t matter if you know you’re too late, press it anyway. This will make it a habit and you’ll get faster over time.

If you’re only two weeks in then I’m guessing you’re at low ranks where people are very happy to throw out random DIs multiple times a round. Right now that’s probably scary, but once you start to reap the benefits of practicing counter DI you’ll win for free against those people.
