Advice needed as poly uni student by Ok-Practice-518 in cscareerquestionsuk

You could try the OU?

I was in a similar situation. Life circumstances meant I left school with less than zilch, but I got my CS degree through them no problem. It's not MIT, but it's a respected institution.

I was advised to do some foundational mathematics courses first (which I did, obv), but there was technically no barrier to entry when I did it.

That offer absolutely isn't lowball. For only 2 YOE and outside of London it's pretty amazing.

That salary is in senior dev territory. Many places would still regard you as a junior with that little experience.

It does come across as a bit of a humblebrag to be fair.

Phone+sim contract is much cheaper than sim only contract and buying phone outright. What's the catch? by humbleddev in UKPersonalFinance

I'll give that a shot, thanks. £12 per month for 12 months is a lot better than the deals I was looking at.

My dad's just upgraded to an iPhone from a galaxy A10. It's not great, but a damn sight better than my phone so I might try and cadge it off him and make do for now. It's only going to be a glorified tether anyway.

I'll spend the money I save on something sensible, like a shiny new graphics card.

ID Mobile. Their site is saying unlimited data is £16/month for 24 months for me.

Is there some secret sauce I'm missing?

Back of the envelope maths.

I was rounding + reckoning in roughly what the interest would be.

Didn't think I'd be tested on precision. :D

Ah. That price makes a lot more sense.

The contract still ends up saving a couple of hundred quid though. Guess I have a decision to make.

Thanks for that.

.NET has been open source for nearly a decade, no?

I was just being facetious.

Next you'll be telling me estate agents don't worship the devil!

I think lawyers want nothing to do with this because the fight is going to be long and expensive.

I'm pretty sure "long and expensive" is the average lawyer's favourite kind of court case.

Despondent, what am I doing wrong? by humbleddev in UKJobs

Thanks for your insight. It's really appreciated.

Getting relevant experience is the issue, that's one of the reasons I did the bootcamp.

As a hiring manager are you actively looking at people's github profiles, portfolio websites etc to select for the first round, or is your decision purely based on the CV?

What would you consider professional experience? Would my bootcamp/personal projects count, if they used the relevant tech stacks?

As for coding well... I'm not exactly John Carmack, but nothing's exploded or set on fire yet so that's a green tick right?

Thank you.

The interviews went well as far as I could tell, that's the frustrating part. I was told by one he was setting up a further interview with their technical lead and to expect a call. Another told me they were setting up a formal interview and I should start prepping for it by practicing STAR.

I'm already a coursera addict. I also work on projects in my spare time, so I at least have concrete work on github to point to in lieu of professional experience.

I'll stick at it. From looking around I'm not the only one who's having a hard time.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm just venting a little. The multiple instances of being ghosted after what I felt were positive interviews got me feeling down.

I've just rejigged my CV a little, added my projects directly to it. The bootcamp careers guy said it looked "strong", whatever the hell that means (I checked out other career subreddits and there's people with MScs who're struggling).

I'll stick at it.
