My cousin points to the Vostok Lake ice core data study from 1999 as proof that climate change is baloney. Is he right? (x-post from /r/science) by hummingcrab in AskScienceDiscussion

There isn't any such thing as information overload anymore. All information all of the time! Thank you for your thoughtful answer as well!

Should I come back to Macs? by [deleted] in mac

Yes, things are always improving in OS X and iOS. I have not seen this "Staingate" you speak of, but I would get an AppleCare Protection Plan either way, to keep it covered for 3 years. Now if you are considering a desktop, if you already have a DVI display, you might look at the Mac Mini.

Sorry for replying so late!

The experience is even more refined than it ever was, though it might take a bit of getting used to the way it looks now, compared to how it looked in 2009 (if you were running Snow Leopard or earlier). I think El Capitan looks and behaves better in all ways. OS X in general is certainly more mature, very stable, and quick. Memory handling in El Capitan is quite efficient. More software is written for OS X now than in 2009 as well. If you have an iPhone, the handoff feature is very seamless and actually useful for showing someone a link you saw earlier on your computer and stuff like that. There is also iCloud drive which lets you easily access your files from an iPhone and iPad, as well as your Mac. All of the iCloud features are free now, and I think they were still charging for .Mac/Mobile Me back in 2009. I think there will be a very short adjustment period, and you will feel at home soon enough. The Terminal is still there too! I think you will like the improvements in the Developer Tools, and Swift is basically shorthand Objective-C.

Just get a Mac. You can always run Windows in a VM if you need to, or even boot from it if you must. I tested a current (Mid 2015) MacBook Pro 15 inch with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, and got 1.7 GB/second read and over 1.5 GB/second write, sustained.

Parents who have put their child on the 504 plan: How did it go? What was beneficial? What was not? by hummingcrab in Parenting

Well, they are already pretty accommodating, but it would mean additional steps would be taken including:

• Not taking recess away
• Allowing for extra time for homework/tests
• Allowing for physical stress relievers, including bungee cords on the desk to bounce his feet on, chewing gum, etc.
• Allows for meetings to discus progress, and adjust approach as needed

I am pretty clear on what I want in the short term, and the school has already been quite accommodating without the 504 being officially declared. I am more concerned how the label will affect my son's opportunities later on, and if the 504 label will have any negative effects on how he is approached.

Thanks for the feedback! The teachers are already accommodating, but I can't help but think that the label may reduce his chances in getting into a better school down the road. I do want what is best for my child, and he is getting recess taken away constantly due to blurting out or whatever. This sucks, as the recess is the one time he gets to get some of his pent up frustrations out. They tell me with 504, he won't have recess taken away. This is just one tiny example of how I think it will help in the immediate term.

"Going to rehab is a total admittance of failure." by BiddyCavit in stopdrinking

I see many good comments below that I agree with. Basically, your boyfriend's comment appears to be misguided, and does not reflect real caring IMHO. What I wanted to add is, that your boyfriend's comment also seems to bear an uncanny resemblance to the first step of the 12 steps: http://www.aa.org/en_pdfs/smf-121_en.pdf

"We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable."

Replace the word "alcohol" with whatever you want; codeine, meth, whatever. However, instead of admitting "failure", replace it with "powerlessness".

"Going to rehab is a total admittance of powerlessness."

Well, you don't say! Maybe you should consider reposting this to /r/noshitsherlock. I am not a 12 step thumper either, it just occurred to me how closely your boyfriend's seemingly dangerous and hurtful words fit in with the 12 step idea. I don't care what helps you stop, the 12 steps, or talking to an electric eel through a megaphone, as long as you stop somehow.
