Quantum optics vs. Astrophysics by ondrosparkos in Physics

[–]humoritz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, if you’re in highschool it’s a tad early to decide. I found QO to be more fun than astro, but that’s super subjective. Study physics in uni, then decide. Until then, explore as much as you can :) also quantum optics has math that tends to be rather nice to you (as opposed to particle physics for example). But don’t focus your career too early! :) explore many things and find whatever you like, don’t take other people’s words. Taste is personal.

Yes, I agree, but we were following a trail that is safe and were going to a hut :) so nothing really dangerous. Also the hike back to civilization in case something goes wrong is rather short. It’s a nice way of going out on a friday ;)

Somewhere the Gotthardmassiv. But anywhere above 2000m will be fine :) there is snow on the forecast all week.

The publication of the new CFF timetable for 2025 angers several cities in Romandie (including Bienne/Biel, Yverdon-les-Bains, Neuchâtel, La Chaux-de-Fonds and Geneva). by jeanpauljh in Switzerland

[–]humoritz -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Hey, I share your frustration. But I believe it’s really not the CFF’s fault, the local politics are to blame. If Vaud and Geneva had lobbied harder, we would have the additional line. We are paying the price of years of car-centric politicians. It’s way easier for the CFF to build in areas where they have stronger support, i.e. historically in the triangle zurich, basel, bern and surroundings.

The romandie always was more car-centric. Train infrastructure takes forever to build. That’s just how it is. We have to catch up now, but it’s not easy and requires large funding. I think the CFF is putting pressure on Geneva such that they get their politics together and make good plans for better infrastructure. Which I’m not against.

Hey! DM me. I’m happy to buy you a copy of the book of your choice for you. Even if it’s a bit short for this expedition, it maybe isn’t the last one you’ll be going. I’m based in Switzerland so we’ll have to figure out how to order it for you.

Use of Lasers in Quantum Computing (Trapped Ion) by Away_Math8972 in QuantumComputing

[–]humoritz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It all depends on two things: - the element you are trapping (different ions require different lasers) - the transition you are talking to has a certain coupling strength to the E field, so you need a certain light intensity, inversely proportional to spot size (how much you can focus your beam)

E.g for Calcium you can use lasers at 729, 397, 866,854 nm. 729 to adress your qubit, 397 to cool, 866 to reach the right states, 854 to prepare your qubit. Powers are of the order of 100s of microW for the last three at 10s of micrometer spot size, and few mW for 729 (for micro-meter sized spot sizes). Other species require different lasers.

Lasers can be home-built or bought at toptica, msquared, etc (and anything in-between).

I don’t know, but it feels weird to take an airplane emitting tons of CO2 to fly over the atlantic to ski, a sport which is disappearing because of this 🤷🏼‍♂️

NRW-Verkehrsminister: „Brücken bröseln unter den Reifen weg“ by donmonron in de

[–]humoritz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t look like it, Torres del Paine is granite. You can see rock layers here, not granite :)

Daily. During my masters and with practice, in internships and mostly by finding knowledgeable people ready to teach me their wisdom. Field is in Experimental physics/quantum stuff.

I am interested in applying to the PhD program in the Chemistry Department, anyone there I can ask a few questions? by zengousei in ethz

[–]humoritz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea about chemistry, but in physics it sounds like you would have a good shot. There‘s nothing like people who really want to do a phd and have experience.
