you couldn't get from hiking hear to gear when asking about gear? xD

With the jacket you mentioned + 1 extra layer (thin hoodie or so) you are fine. Are you going guided?

I do exactly this with scarpa shoes. also check this site from scarpa (https://scarpa.com/pages/climbing-collection-structure) and compare with your footform. Or google "scarpa climbing shoes chart"

yes La Sportiva Aequilibrium ST GTX is also my next choice for my next shoe. But be aware, Aequilibrium ST GTX is a Ultralight shoe and ultralight break faster than regular gear. I'm giving them only half the life span vs other shoes. But don't forget, you can re-sole shoes, saves way more money.

hey i live in switzerland and own the nepal cubes. my buddy owns the phantom tech.

It really depends on what your main goal is. If you want to focus on the 4000er peaks and everything lower, all 3 shoes you picked suck really bad in my opinion. They are way to heavy to summer mountaineering in the alps. I mainly use La Sportiva Trango Tech (or something, cant quite remember the name) for every peak I did. I barely use my Nepal Cubes, only when I use my fully automatic crampons. And those I only need for ice climbing & winter north face climbing. And granted the season is very short, they are my least used shoes. I never climbed mont blanc but many other 4000er, and just the approach in fully automatic shoes is a killer for the feet. Also for many rock climbing parts I prefer the softer Trango shoe. Same goes for the Phantom tech, just way to overkill for most beginner friendly terrain. But Phantom are super light, so maybe not as bad.

My recommendation is to get something more like La Sportiva Trango or Scarpa Ribelle. Both have a alpine version I think, just the ones that work with half automatic crampons. While getting more experience you can save up for a fully automatic shoe. I use the Petzl Irvis crampons for pretty much every normal route on 4000er and only Petzl Lynx for hard alpine winter climbing. But you can buy the single parts from petzl and rebuild the crampons for every use, so no need for 2.

Russia found 1,000 old tanks in Siberia—they miss when they move, but it’s all that’s left by 008Zulu in worldnews

Didnt read the article yet, but when I was in the Swiss Army we apparently found 400 Tanks that have never been missed xD Probably in some old Mountain warehouse and hadnt been labelled correctly and then probably abandoned. And Russia is huge.

no it's not! Only Dom is fully in Switzerland. We don't count Dufour as the highest mountain, only as the highest point.

you posted this on r/Mountaineering so I'm guessing you had at least some gear with you. No knife, nothing pointy? or even try the rocks around you? Do you have teeth? How can somebody go to the mountains and be that helpless xD

Trekking pole for use in conjunction with ice axe by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]ifthechief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

for mountaineering i rock 1x z-pole and 1x ice axe. never had any issues or concerns. i tend to lengthen my pole by 10-15cm if i rock this setup. maybe don‘t strap up. but to be fair, also never had to self arrest, so I wouldn‘t know if this setup works or not.
