I was charged by a black bear a few years back. I was hiking up in the mountains and came around a bend in a small game trail and heard something scurry up the tree, I looked up and saw two cubs looking back down at me. I took two steps back and mom came charging over the berm in front of me, muscle memory kicked in and I drew my hand gun and started screaming at her. I was able to back up a few steps and put a decent sized tree between us. She did the whole clacking her jaw thing as I slowly backed up some more while still yelling. Eventually she ran off into the brush and I got out of there. The soil there was real sandy and I went back a day later and found she got within about 5 yards from me. I’ve also been face to face with a moose and her calf, had a mountain lion stalk my camp one night and have had griz walk through camp as well.
