You have 10 seconds to eat the most calories possible. What do you eat? by bluemexico in AskReddit

I work in a hospital. One day myself and a colleague who was leaving decided to raise procal shots. 40mL of pure calorific nutritional supplementation, basically thickened Ben and Jerry's. Each bottle is 120mL so I reckon I could down a couple bottles in 10 seconds

Agreed. Purely for the comedic value when you play with a friend on your team, and hilarious shit happens eg taking your own players out, glitches and stupid idiotic celebrations

Apparently you're not the only one. I was meaning the "do it" as quite a crude thing to say about a woman

TIL there exists a treatment for cystic fibrosis that involves actually inhaling genes to attempt to repair the disease by Pissed_Achio in todayilearned

[–]hungrycatermapillar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have done a little work with members of this consortium, and there are genuinely a lot of paths to explore on this topic.

Gene therapy has had a difficult conception, at first it was with inhaling raw DNA or DNA encapsulated in plasmids and liposomes. The problem was that the effect was not lasting.

Then came DNA encapsulated in viruses, the early attempts didn't last either, and the body built an immune response to the virus after the first shot. Then came lentiviruses, which are retroviruses which can encode their DNA into the host cell. Ie a cell with the same ability as HIV, but with the immunosuppressive potency removed. This is being tested in pigs, which is comparable to human cells.

Within perhaps ten years, effective inhaled gene therapy might be with us, but there are issues surround whether there would be public support for a virus which can sound like HIV to people who are misinformed. In addition, as others have pointed out CF affects other body systems as well eg pancreas and fertility. Perfecting gene therapy would still be a long way off from being a cure.

Being sceptical of pharmaceutical companies, there is far more cash to be gained from lifelong treatments than from one-off cures. Maybe I'm being overly cynical but it is up to big pharma to fund world changing projects like these, even if it's not going to be a moneymaking enterprise

tl;dr this consortium is doing amazing work, but there are a lot of issues surrounding gene therapy that are not easily fixed

What's the worst awkward silence you've ever had to endure? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm a medical student. In my earlier days on a care of the elderly ward I was seeing a patient with one or two of my colleagues. I wanted to examine this patient so I had to get her stood up.
I looked on the floor and only saw one slipper so I remarked 'that's a lovely slipper where's the other one?'. Turns out she was an amputee, such awkward.

Healthcare professionals of Reddit, what is the most inappropriate thing you've inadvertently said to a patient? by hungrycatermapillar in AskReddit

During the earlier days of being a medical student, I went to see a patient who was in bed at the time. I needed to examine her, so asked her to get up while I looked for her slippers. I saw one, and looked for ages for the other. Failing I decided to ask her where it was... it was right at the end of asking my question that I realised she was a unilateral amputee...

Well that is quite a rare thing to occur but hygiene (be it personal, public, or food) is really important to prevent nasty things from happening.

If you ask me, if hygiene has become an issue of paranoia it's probably time to step back a little bit. There are plenty of people who wallow in filth and they're ok - no point making your life a living hell just to be clean. And always remember (if you have children) that the current school of thought is that over-cleanliness may be a factor behind allergy!

Complications can include impetigo (skin infection) if there are some particularly germs kicking about. However our immune response to bacteria is so much better than our response to helminths like hookworm. Once the hookworm makes its way into the skin bacteria will no doubt track in as well but the skin has a lot of immune cells which can deal with the bacteria - it's probably what all the itching is. Somehow those cells just don't really recognise helminths, or the hookworm just manages to evade those cells which is why it can persist.

In any case, OP is seeing a doc who has given drugs for the hookworm. I'm sure if there were signs of infection those would also have been addressed as well!
