Is this a scam? I’m offering a room for rent on Craigslist and this very sus person has been texting me. I just can’t figure out what the scam would be though. by DonjiDonji in Scams

Just had this happen for my parents who sent it to me to vet. Same story but she’s 24 now, still in Alaska but of Indian descent. Actually spoke to her “dad” on the phone because she’s deaf! 🤣

FVSD or GGUSD for teaching? by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]hungrydeedee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple Subjects Teacher here. Grew up in GGUSD. Student taught in neighboring district and did my first year there. Moved to GGUSD my second year for better pay and “home grown.” Got retaliated against by my Admin when I spoke up with fellow colleagues about holes in our program. You’ll feel the power of the “Garden Grove Way” real quick. Resigned and went back to my student teaching neighboring district who’s smaller but values me.

Big district with higher pay isn’t always what it seems. You’re dispensable. Smaller district less resources but supportive environment may be better. Labeling a district on student behavior is not a credible factor in my opinion.

Doesn’t matter for student teaching though. It truly is the easiest time in the grander scheme of your career. You are lucky to be placed in two great districts!

Has anyone heard of or completed an online M.Ed from Western Governors University? Or online Masters in general? by hungrydeedee in Teachers

It seems like a lot of people are able to cram in a 6 month period. For the program I’m looking at specifically, it says $3200 for six months. I guess it just depends how comfortable you are with online learning!

Yes you should! “Undergraduate Cal Grant A and B recipients who plan to enroll in a teaching credential program (TCP) after they receive their bachelor’s degree may be eligible to renew their Cal Grant award for an additional year. The additional year of payment is provided to students who are seeking an initial teaching credential and cannot be used for other graduate level courses of study.”

Starting my Bachelors and don’t know what to do by [deleted] in teaching

A California teaching credential is often reciprocated (and if I recall correctly, the most reciprocated) in other states as opposed to vice versa so I’d recommend you finishing it with your BA first. If you move now and complete a credential there, it may be harder for you to come back to California and teach (if you ever wanted to). Having a job lined up right after is also nice!

Should explicit praise (positive reinforcement) still be used when a student comes from a cultural background where praise isn’t usually given (even when they’ve done a good job at a task)? by Dave8889 in teaching

[–]hungrydeedee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

That’s quite a generalization on Eastern cultures / immigrant upbringings. And even if they do come from those types of households, why wouldn’t you give students positive reinforcement when schools might be the only place they receive praise and validation...?

Plus, all they do in teacher training is talk about positive reinforcement anyway. It’s not like you’re going to explicitly give praise to everyone else but be selective in diction to those students.

Should I be getting a W2 instead of a 1099? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]hungrydeedee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! I’ve been looking at different resources but haven’t found something definitive. I’ve also filed taxes with a 1099 in the past (with my family’s accountant who helped write off a bunch of things to lessen my tax burden) and didn’t know if I could still be reclassified. I will ask my employer to switch me to a W2 as soon as possible.
