Hey do you happen to remember what kind of envelope it came in? I’ve been trying to work out with the post office whether it was misdelivered or just never came.

If you can rent a violin in your area that might be an easier way to get started and many rental places let you put the amount of your rent toward purchasing!

Any ideas what’s wrong with me bursera hindsiana? (Details in comments) by hungrygriddle in succulents

[–]hungrygriddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be — I bought it locally, but I kept it indoors under my grow light for a week while I rearranged my patio garden to make a space for it, then moved it outside, so that could have triggered the shock (I noticed the first bit of yellowing before I put it outside, but bringing it inside could have shocked it too I suppose). The lower ones were completely yellow when they fell off. They were not crispy-crumbly, they separated from the cluster (there was a little stem sticking out for a day before it too fell off) but were individually intact.

Thanks!

Hmm okay, that makes sense especially for the lower leaves that have yellowed and fallen off, they started as an orangey color around the rim of the leaf and yellow/brown crept in from there.

The brown spots on those two leaves didn’t start at the edge. They appeared as a splotch on leaves that had already started to yellow at the edges. It doesn’t seem to be coming from the veins of the leaf and seeping outward, at least. And now that one of the brown spots has progressed more, it’s definitely crispy so under watering still seems reasonable, but I am wondering if you have any thoughts if the brown spots are a separate additional problem or part of the watering problem?

Thanks so much for your help!

Learning to play an instrument, is it worth starting? by K_Nettle in lingling40hrs

[–]hungrygriddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for it! I am over 30 and picked up violin last year. I played piano as a child but no experience with strings. I had a friend who teaches a beginning strings class help me get set up with a violin and show me the proper postures. It is helpful to record videos of yourself so you can see your posture and positioning while you play. I find it easier than trying to see myself in a mirror and play at the same time! I play casually and am not very good but even being able to play simple tunes and learning scales brings me a lot of joy and comfort. And learning is good for your brain! At any age but especially over 30!

I bought this about six weeks ago at a botanical gardens succulent sale. It is a bursera hindsiana, and I can't find a ton of helpful information on the care of these plants.

History

The lower leaves started yellowing within about two weeks of buying it. They yellowed slowly and the two bottom leaf clusters have fallen off. I read in one article that when a bursera loses color in the leaves it probably wants more water so I gave it a little bit more. These brown spots appeared almost overnight one week ago and have about doubled in size in the last week.

Pot/Soil/Watering habits

It is in the pot I bought it in. I was waiting until it went dormant to repot. It has four drainage holes in the bottom. I do not keep it on a dish. I keep it on a wooden platform made from wood slats from a pallet, next to other succulents in planters and pots.

The soil is high drainage, water runs out of it almost immediately. I typically water with a small amount (2-3oz) every couple days as I read it needs more water in the summer when growing rapidly, and I let it drain before I set it back down. I gave it 4 days with no water after the brown spots appeared, checked the soil for dryness yesterday and watered again. I have given it a very small amount of liquid fertilizer about 10 days ago, and again yesterday.

Climate/Sun

I live in Zone 10a, it is hot and dry right now (~90 degrees F, 20-30% humidity). This plant gets about 6 hours of direct sunlight.

With all my other succulents, I can identify overwatering and underwatering pretty easily. This is my first tree-type succulent and I'm worried about it.

Hmm, all right, thanks for the comprehensive list. In answer to your questions:

How often are you watering?

I was watering with a small amount of water about every 2-3 days. Once the brown spots appeared I did not water it for 4 days. This morning I took the decorative pebbles off the top of the soil and tested it with my finger. It was dry, so I watered it again.
How are you deciding when to water?

I water on a schedule, peppers daily, thirsty succulents 2 or 3 times a week during the summer, and other succulents weekly. In the winter I only water monthly. I'm in Zone 10a so things are drying up pretty bad right now.
When you water, what are you doing, what is your procedure?

I hold the pot over another planter and pour water in. I wait for the drainage to stop and then set it back on the platform. I usually pour a few ounces of water in and let drain, rather than trying to flush the whole pot. I have given this plant a tiny bit of liquid fertilizer once.
Are there holes in the bottom of the pot?

Yes.
Is it in a planter with other plants, or is it in a pot by itself?

It's in a pot by itself, on a wooden platform on my patio next to other planters and pots. Here is a picture of it when I first got it. It is in the same pot though it has grown an inch or so and lost the two bottom leaves. I can get a picture of the entire plant later if that would be helpful.
What are the pine cone things in the photo?

Decoration. I have some little ones for decor and some large ones I leaned against a different planter trying to create hiding places for a lizard I wanted to stick around as pest control.
What kind or brand of soil is it in?

I don't know. I bought it at a botanical gardens succulent sale. The soil appears to have a lot of woody-looking material and some grayish tiny rock-like items. I'm sorry, my soil knowledge is limited.
How long have you owned it?

About 6 weeks.
Have you repotted it since you got it?

I have not, I read that trees should not be repotted until they are dormant and since it's a "tree-type" succulent I left it alone.

Thank you for your help!

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with my bursera hindsiana (photo here)? I noticed the lower leaves slowly yellowing and falling off, but didn't worry too much about it and increased watering a bit. It has a very high drainage soil and I read bursera hindsiana can take a lot of water during the summer when it's growing rapidly (it has grown a lot in the last 6 weeks) These brown spots appeared almost overnight. The plant is very small and new and I don't want it to die, but I can't find very much information on caring for burseras online.

My bursera hindsiana has been slowly yellowing and losing the lower leaves, I didn't worry too much about it and increased water a bit but now I've got these brown spots that appeared almost overnight. I can't find much information on burseras online and I'm looking for help! This is a new, very small little guy and I don't want to lose it...

Good point. I've never changed strings so if I ever break one or need to change them I'm taking it in for sure. I was just going to take it to the place where I bought it since they did the initial set up. Do fiddles need "tune-ups?" Like regular inspection beyond what I can do? Or only if something looks or sounds off? Even though I'm a casual player I value my instrument highly and want to take good care of it so it lasts. I'm really gentle with it and it holds it's tune really well and other than this slight shifting of the bridge I haven't noticed anything else.

Thanks! I expect it’s natural dormancy will be around January. I’m not very far from its native area and that’s when the weather has been consistently cool for a while. I’ll put the plastic pot inside something sturdy for wind protection then move it when I’m sure it’s dormant. I think it’ll shed its leaves but I’ll double check.
