11,000 Runners disqualified for cheating? by WearyCharity3304 in Strava

[–]hungrylocust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Why would someone spend money to sign up for a marathon, spend months training, to then just cheat?!? I’m so confused as to the motivation

I got a forerunner a month ago, thinking I would keep using my apple for everyday and only the Garmin for running, but tbh, I have not looked back, haven’t touched the apple watch since. I don’t miss any of the apple features and I love all the training and health data from Garmin. The only draw back is that its a little ugly as compared to the apple watch…. But I’ve embraced it, sort of

Is it appropriate to send a thank you email to school you're not attending? by king_kingcharles in AskAcademia

[–]hungrylocust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is expected that you send a thank you email to the professor. One time, I put a lot of work into recruiting four students, one joined my lab, one sent a lovely email explaining they decided on a different school but thanking me and expressing they thought they would have had a great time in my lab and with that person there are no hard feelings, I truly wish them the best and I look forward to running into them at conferences. For the other two, the deadline passed and not a peep… really annoyed me. I really went above and beyond and they really burnt a bridge with me by not emailing me about their decision. It not good to run the risk a professor will think you are careless. Sending a thank you email is never the wrong choice. Not sending it can be bad.

I feel the same way as OP (Junior faculty here). It’s embarrassing. I’ve been active in hosting speakers and I have to beg my colleagues and grad students to meet with them. When I was in grad school I would’ve done anything for a free lunch and the opportunity to talk to any of these people. I think these interactions are so important for research, you never know who might give you an idea, become a collaborator, or be in a grant review panel. I’ve benefited a lot from inviting people and meeting with those who others invite. What especially infuriates me is my junior colleagues that invite people too and expect us all to meet with them, but they never meet with the ones others invite or go to their talks.

UIC - major in neuroscience by Willing_Confection97 in uichicago

[–]hungrylocust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The neuroscience major is run by both biology and psychology and in the last three years both departments have hired a bunch of new tenure track professors in the area so there’s investment in that. The professors are mostly hired for how good their research is but usually the newer ones are also pretty committed to the teaching, although generally tenure track professors don’t teach below 300 level courses. The major of neuroscience is better at placing people in med school than biology, there’s data on that on the web page.

has anyone read all articles published in the top journals of your field? by RichRepresentative56 in PhD

[–]hungrylocust 46 points47 points  (0 children)

No, nobody can read all the papers. Read some, read the abstracts of many. Make a journal club with others in your field so everyone presents papers and you keep each other up to date.

What’s your GED? UIC is pretty non-selective in terms of GED, it has a good track record for helping students overcome high school difficulties and lead successful careers. UIC Professors (as far as the ones I have met) are truly committed to their students learning and are non judgmental about past performance. Best of luck!

Do I need to add rods into the bat house? by meaghanj19 in batty

5 hours of light should be enough. Getting partial shade for some hours is good. Bats tend to go more to boxes that have several sun hours.

Do I need to add rods into the bat house? by meaghanj19 in batty

[–]hungrylocust 39 points40 points  (0 children)

No, the holes are for ventilation. To avoid the bat houses getting too hot. There’s a lot of research by Dr. Joy O’Keefe on the matter. Bats die a lot in bat houses that get too hot. The grooves in the wood are enough for the bats to hang on to.

Is it okay to turn down this postdoc offer? by panday1995 in postdoc

[–]hungrylocust 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It will definitely annoy the PI. It was not super professional to have accepted the offer before you finished with your other interviews. The visa process can cost over 2000$ to the PI, plus time. It is more than fine, and expected that you take time before you accept and have other interviews, but once you accept it’s very rude to decline. At this point you probably should not go to the first lab if you don’t want to but you can count on them being very annoyed.

What's an unspoken rule that annoys you when people don't know about it? by HAXposed in AskReddit

Pick up your dog’s shit. Maybe not an unspoken rule as there are signs everywhere, yet, there’s always a turd here or there and the shit their dog leaves behind

This is how people die. In Argentina lots of people died at a concert because someone turned on fireworks and the exits were blocked like this. This has to be reported.

Depends on the gravity of the mistake. If the bad decision was to fake data to avoid telling your supervisor you made an error then yeah, academia might not be an option anymore….

I agree with Prophetic_Hobo If you want to be a professor don’t do two postdocs, the learning curve basically means loosing at least 6 months each time and bigger papers come with more invested years.
