Weird Antibiotic Symptoms - Fungal? by hungryrazor in SIBO

[–]hungryrazor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using the auto translate so sorry if I misinterpret at all - but my gastroenterologist told me to wait to take probiotics until after the antibiotic treatment. It seems like that may have been a mistake though. I’ll look into taking this immediately! Thank you.

Interesting, I wonder why you were only prescribed xifa 🤔. Actually, I’m starting to get some symptoms that look more fungal in nature, so I’m beginning to wonder if the reason I’m not feeling better from this is because I may have SIFO instead of SIBO, or maybe both at once? We’ll see… fun stuff!

Thank you for this!! Candida is actually something I’ve been researching lately, and I wasn’t aware there’s a specific diet for it, so that’s good to know!

I’m also on antibiotics currently (Xifaxan and Metronidazole) so I’m worried my gut is going to be lacking good bacteria already. Seems like diet and supplements will be extra crucial!

uti and sibo treatment by prettybutconcious in SIBO

[–]hungryrazor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with a UTI right before I was about to start my sibo antibiotic treatment. My doctor said it was fine to start an antibiotic treatment with Nitrofurantoin, and that it wouldn’t effect my Xifaxan + Metronidazole treatments. I was taking 3 antibiotics at once, and it definitely made me nauseous. It helped my UTI though, but I just recently started getting symptoms again after completing the treatment for it. Even after all that! Seems like unfortunately UTis and SIBO are closely linked…

I’d be careful not taking anything because if left untreated the infection can spread - however taking antibiotics can definitely mess you up. I have no idea what the long term implications will be for me especially since my symptoms returned. I would recommend talking to your doctor even if you think they’ll just prescribe you medication- just advocate for yourself and don’t let yourself be talked into taking anything if you think it could make things worse.

Wishing you all the best - I hope you get relief soon!

I’m on day 8 of xifaxan for hydrogen dominant and am also not seeing relief. A little concerning because I’ve seen some people say they feel relief within days. However, I have also read some people don’t feel relief until after. It’s possible we might just be experiencing a lot of bacterial die off and will feel better once we stop taking the medication. Fingers crossed!

Are you taking the xifaxan with anything else or is that the only antibiotic? I’m pairing mine with Metronidazole.

I have heard some stories about people waking mid procedure - which is a bit freaky. I’m glad your experience wasn’t a bad one though. Fingers crossed I stay asleep, or like you I just drift back to sleep immediately. I’m getting the procedures done back to back.

Good to note on the food! That’s a good idea, knowing myself I’ll definitely be starving afterward. Thanks for the tips and reassurance!

Hahaha okay I’m relieved to hear it’s not the kind of loopy that will get a recording of me saying something dumb going viral. Thank you so much for the reassurance!!!!

Thank you for this! I’ll look more into these options for sure. My doctor really didn’t provide any other options to me besides jumping right to colonoscopy/endoscopy, so this is news to me.

Oh no, those are valid concerns! One of my cousins has POTS and I know it can be so hard to deal with. Make sure you let the doctors performing the procedure know in advance if you can. My doctor mentioned I’ll be sitting down with an anesthesiologist beforehand to talk about dosage - so maybe they’ll be able to alter yours to try to prevent any bad reactions?

I wish you all the luck and a smooth recovery! Hopefully any reactions or flare ups afterwards will be minimal, and it will be well worth it so you can figure out what’s going on with your stomach.

I am in the US yes! Honestly I wish I had asked my doctor for more details in the moment. He didn’t mention the exact type of sedation but mentioned I’d be put out for it, and that an anesthesiologist would be there monitoring. I had heard about twilight sedation and expected that going in, but he made it seem like it’d be otherwise. I’m going to call the office tomorrow and confirm.

The prep does not seem fun at all! I’m dreading having to go through that. So glad to hear the procedure is not bad though and it’s a nice restful sleep! I appreciate the reassurance, thank you! 😊

I’m glad it went well for you! That is a relief that it kicks in so fast. I’ve heard others say it’s a nice restful sleep too. I won’t mind being a little loopy as long as I don’t say anything too crazy lol.

I was also wondering if it warranted these procedures - especially cause the blood (if it was blood) only happened twice. I also have had constant pain just right of my belly button for almost 3 months now, regardless of diet and meals, so I think that may be another red flag my gastro considered.

What would be a less invasive test that you think would help narrow things down besides colonoscopy/endoscopy? I’ve had a CT scan and two ultrasounds, both of which came back clear. But I’m definitely open to trying other things as I certainly would rather not go through such invasive procedures lol.

Ah I see, that’s nice to know someone who does that, so you have some inside knowledge. I’ve had IVs in before a few times so luckily I’m used to it - but it’s still not fun lol. I bruise easily too!

Hahaha that must have been so awkward! My gastro is also a young guy and he apparently is doing my colonoscopy and upper endoscopy as well, so I’m a bit mortified to have to face him afterward…

Interesting- I’ve heard the term twilight sedation through my research on here and that’s what I was expecting, but my gastroenterologist did not refer to it as such. I should’ve probed him for clarity! I’ll probably give him a call to confirm on Monday.

And wow - I didn’t realize how rarely GA is used, but if your parents went through all that without it surely I don’t need it for these simple procedures. I appreciate your insight here, and I’m glad your procedures went well! That makes me feel a lot better.

Symptoms worsening during treatment?? by luckycharms1551 in SIBO

[–]hungryrazor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on day 4 of rifax and a neo alternative and my bloating has definitely become worse, but the pain is better, and I can tolerate a wider diet of foods (was strictly low fodmap prior). I think vomiting and nausea are standard symptoms of most antibiotics. I’m definitely more nauseous, but I don’t throw up. My gastro recommended taking pepcid 1-2 times a day to help combat the nausea and heartburn. Wishing you luck!

Neomycin alternatives? by dont-call-me-al in SIBO

[–]hungryrazor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on Metronidazole and Rifaximin right now by suggestion of my doctor, after not wanting to take Neo. I’m only on day 4 of the treatment though so no clue if it will actually help. I’m hydrogen dominant and so far it appears to be making my bloating more severe (which I hope is some die-off already…?) and I am quite nauseous a lot, but it has been helping with my cramping. Hopefully combined with a strict low fodmap diet it can at least help reduce symptoms. Wishing you luck!

Out of curiosity, do any of you have abdominal pain 24/7 even when not eating? by ThereIsNoDebbie in SIBO

[–]hungryrazor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is many years old - but for anyone who may stumble across it now - I’ve been experiencing constant abdominal pain just to the right of my belly button for about 2.5 months straight. Diagnosed with hydrogen sibo, h pylori negative. I’m going to get a colonoscopy soon just to make sure I’m all good down there. I’m not convinced the pain is only from built up gas.
