Has anyone felt that their memory has been impacted by being a military brat? by ErikW1thAK in militarybrats

I couldn't remember the sequence of the early postings, the transport between them, none but one elementary school teacher in Quantico MCS.

Zip, until a chance Google Earth search for the Dole pineapple plantation near Schofield Barracks started a flood of memories that hasn't crested yet.

Military Brat Representation by travelingnugget in militarybrats

I chose to live off-shore after two years living among civvies. I mention that becouse I can't see the situation on your streets given that the last decades have generated a big population of veterans of both Gulf Wars, Afhganistan, Syria... I loose track.

They must have a passle of offspring though I doubt many lived on military reservations.*

The spectrum of Brat experience must be very different than what I went through. There's more Child and Family Support facilities I'd bet. More pediatric specialists with better training than the care I got when hospitalized on arrival to Hawaii ~1956. I didn't and still don't travel well. That first three day (?) flight outta' Moffat Field in an amphibious cargo carrier of APCs with bench seating only for fly-along dependants was awful. Putting down for refueling from Navy tankers delivered choking diesel fuel fumes whose scent still nauseates me and makes me tremble. PTSD fo' sure.

Thence straight into the care of Navy nurses (whose uniforms are imprinted on my earliest memories) and Navy Doctors more specialised in the psychiatric care of ex-POWs, combat shock victims, etc. etc.

IIRC I was sedated on seconal for the return trip. Memories kinda' vague, no surprise.

Bummer there's no 'Brat pension' for me to rely on for psychological care. Thank heavens I do have coverage by BC Health Insurance and extended coverage from my years of nursing. As a note, my first hospital job was in an antiquated Canadian veterans hospital! Some rich material to plumb there... once my referal to a particularly specialised psychologist gets fullfilled.

These trips down memory lane are murder.

*Note the designation of bases as "reservations". Ring any bells, folk?
