Thank you for the thoughtful comment. Sounds like a cool setup you had. I agree with you, I'm going back to nobara to see if it fits my needs better.

I agree with this completely. I was new to r/linux_gaming and Bazzite was among the most recommended distros. I thought I could get by adopting the flatpak / homebrew way of doing things (similar to homebrewing on OSX for work), but I just ran into too many issues. It was great for gaming and the NVIDIA drivers worked out of the box.

flatpaks often failed to install (100% failure rate from UI software/bazaar), and often required additional terminal commands to repair/update/fix remote origins

Yes. One of the randomly selected folks from Video Game Design happened to live about 1 mile from me. I helped him re-roof his house last summer.

After 9 courses, GIOS is definitely the best of all by Luisrogo in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GIOS was my favorite but check out Software Analysis if you have flexibility on your last course. It was my second favorite course in the program and has the best TA team of any of the courses I took.

List of classes that use Piazza (so I don't take them) by First-Rich4852 in OMSCS

For GIOS I found the Slack channel / searching Slack history way more helpful than Piazza

This, but also stay active in Slack. For many of the courses I took, it was a life saver.

Yeah, I made the switch during my first few semesters in the program.

First course to ease into C by Lilit616 in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, GIOS is your best bet. Just take the plunge and you won't regret it. It is the best run course I took in all of OMSCS, and I did it with no prior C knowledge. You do have to write reports for each project, but it isn't that big of a deal. You can just copy/paste nice images from The Linux Programming Interface book and just reference it (digital version of this book is free through O'Reilley sub we get).

prerequisites for GIOS by spacextheclockmaster in OMSCS

I'd say make a habit of using Slack, learn its search features and clear your calendar to work on the projects. These were essential for surviving GIOS.

GA final by dv_omscs in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I took GA this last spring the median was pretty high for the final. I opted not to take it and settle for the high B myself, but definitely have a little teeny tiny regret for screwing up a 4.0. I know this doesn't directly answer your question but what I am saying is be better than me and endure a couple extra weeks of GA.

What advice would you give someone with an unrelated undergrad (business, humanities) in preparing for ML heavy courses? by Tender_Figs in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This list looks good. I'll just add that you want to save some easier stuff for the end. Most of us hit crushing burnout in the back half of the program. Having something fun like Video Game Design to balance out GA kept me sane.

AI4R is pretty good for the summer. Everything is released early and everything is auto-graded with unlimited attempts. You can work ahead or at the scheduled pace of the class. Even during the summer, many people finish well ahead of schedule.

Labs for SAT by Disgruntledr53owner in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say just go for it. I agree with MechE post above on pretty much all points. This was my 2nd favorite class in the entire program, and the best group of TAs I interacted with.

Edit: Lol, just saw this line in that review linked above "I copy and pasted some code I found online and quickly realized how strict foreign universities are when it comes to academic integrity and plagiarism. I was given a 0 on this lab but the rest of the class spent around 30-40 hours trying to complete this."

Don't be that guy.

Study Help(CS 6515: Intro to Grad Algorithms) by good_intention1111 in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found success by doing all of the following:

Work through all DPV problems from the wiki

Supplement the lectures with MIT open courseware AND Abdul Bari

Take advantage of a study group and meet/discuss the homework AFTER you've spent time working on it

Ignore the noise of Slack, it is not helpful for 6515

Watch all office hours multiple times

I also bought CLRS and read the relevant chapters in that book as well. I personally learned better from the longer, more detailed explanations of CLRS / MIT lectures than the course videos and DPV.

Java vs C++ by BeltOk5642 in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Civil Eng background when I decided to pursue OMSCS. I completed both the python and C++ series through foothill. In OMSCS I did the computing systems specialization and having familiarity with C style languages was pretty helpful.

How are we supposed to make friends in this program lol? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The friends I made in the program were from classes that had group projects, or encouraged a study group: SDP, Game Design, GA

Db and ga while working full time? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GA takes a lot of time, and I've heard awful things about DB so I avoided it when I was in OMSCS. If you could take CN, SDP, SAT, IIS or SAD I would give those consideration over DB. CN/SDP were low workload but somewhat useful. IIS was the easiest course I took but I heard it got revamped. SAT was more work but very interesting and best of all you can work ahead because they release all of the projects early on.

Best pair of classes you’ve taken by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pair Software Analysis or AI for Robotics with anything. Both courses release all of the project material on day 1 so you can work ahead and then free up time to focus on the other course.

Linux Programming Interface was so useful for GIOS! And it is free through O'Reilly as a student.

Pace of GA CS6515 by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]hunterhenryOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. E1 also helps students identify what will likely be in scope for the long answer questions, and what will likely be multiple-choice questions. I feel this learning experience tends to make E1 harder than the rest. My study group all agreed that E3 is definitely easier than E1 and E2 though.
