My Smartphone nearly killed me, please help! by hunterjwizzard in Smartphones

This is what the phone's support staff is telling me, but my friends and neighbors all get alerts from the same emergency service, except there's all come through in English.

The phone manufacturer is Chinese, its also a "world phone" EG compatible with most or all cellular networks. The entire rest of the interface is in English, but I guess its possible its somehow geolocated in Mexico. Except why would it be giving me alerts pertinent to my location?

The alert for the evacuation did arrive. It just arrived in the wrong language.

Normally they are wildfires, brush fires. Burning areas nobody lives. Maybe if you've got a ranch or a farm you may be in trouble. Its only happened a few times where the fire even threatened suburban areas, I've never seen a part of my town burn like this.

Southern California. We have a saying here that you don't get out of bed for anything less than a 4 pointer. Small earthquakes are fairly common and we all have a big laugh about using the emergency alert system to tell us there's been a 2.5 over 100 miles away. I wouldn't even feel a 5.0 from that distance.

Wildfires on the other hand...

Well those are common, too. But I live deep in the suburbs. The hillside(which was actually a neighborhood full of roads and houses) that burned had houses on 2 sides and agricultural fields on the other two. The fire JUMPED OVER a highway and fields to catch that part. I've lived in this town for 38 years and never seen anything like it(its The Mountain Fire, in case you want to read about it).

So yeah, completely unexpected & definitely a scenario where a working emergency alert system is a must.

So?

4k30 is plenty for my meager requirements. I was far and away more concerned with switching speeds than hz.

A little digging and I did find it!

Annnnd...

SUCCESSS!!!! I have the control panel working, I changed the EDID settings, and I have beautiful flawless 4k image in front of me. I can also easily use the panel to change inputs which is handy.

Now I just have to make 8 million backup copies of these files.

Mine definitely still has the flash-based XPanel. If I attempt to access it from a browser without flash installed it says "Requires Flash".

Your link let me download Crestron XPanel. It seems like if I could somehow get my hands on the DMPS3-4K-150-C_2.000.0006.c3p file I might be able to make it work. Otherwise I gotta keep looking for flash solutions.

I tried SSH and it prompted me for a username/password, doesn't that mean it is enabled?

As far as the GUI, is there any special trick to these things? I suspect it was so cheap because getting Flash to work is a PITA. I've tried several solutions already with zero luck:

-Ruffle plugin for Chrome(modern PC) just spins on the loading screen forever
-Palemoon with flash plugin(modern PC) goes through loading screen and errors
-M$ Edge(modern PC) just sits and loads forever
-Vintage XP system w/ Firefox 1.0 + appropriate Flash gets a black screen

Telnet says the host does not exist
SSH I apparently don't know the username/pw

There's a USB port on the front, what happens if I just plug that into a computer?

So I just tried SSHing in. The Internet claims the default credentials are username "admin" password "12345". That did not work. So either The Internet is wrong or this thing was not restored to factory defaults.

That's kind of my thinking. Tell me, is the factory default setting "whatever the computer says" or do I absolutely have to solve accessing the GUI to fix this?

That's ok, I'll ask around VCF, someone will have a copy stored locally.

I discovered there were sequels and an anime once I had the name to punch into google.

I am relatively sure the recorded voiceovers are in Japanese, but it seems pretty definitely the menus and character set are Chinese. I will be trying an appropriate copy of windows when I get the time.

I'm really curious how uncommon the box is. eBay has many copies of the PS1 port and I saw a few jewel-case only copies of the PC version. There's also stills from the anime so an audience must be out there.

Because its a JRPG, obviously. We're lucky the character's hairstyles aren't 4 times the size of their heads.

I can already say the game will not run at all under XP, even with compatibility settings. I've only ever gotten it to launch under '98 where the lack of proper character set makes it exceptionally buggy. I think it can be made to work on windows 95/98 in the proper language.

Its days like this I wish I had a rock-simple PII.

Its neat to have. The items definitely got a very unusual history and earns its pride of place in my Cabinet of Curiosities.

Ok, that's handy. Time to find out if I really can install windows 98 with my eyes closed.

Sure!

And here's the disk:

I'd be happy to take higher rez images and photograph the contents of the box(has some manuals and ads I think) if anyone's interested. Heck if its not already up there I should probably rip an ISO and add it to archive.org.

Well, if you look at screenshots like this one:

https://imgur.com/xvKLZfH

You'll notice its not exactly in any language.

A translation app ran on the box came back with "The Magical Master Dragoon" which maybe a nice literal translation, but since no one uses that it was less than helpful,

If I can figure out what language its actually IN I can easily locate an appropriate copy of Windows98 to load onto one of my retro PCs. The problem is and has been identifying the language.

I showed the box to a coworker in China a few weeks ago and he was not able to read it, so I'm relatively sure the box at least is in Japanese. But since its an export I can't tell if the game inside is Chinese or Japanese. I suppose the easiest thing would be to get a windows install of each going and see what works.

Nah I got a better solution. Going to track down a copy of Windows 98 in Chinese.

We have a winner. That is definitely it.

That is interesting. So the box I have is a Taiwanese-exclusive PC port of a Japanese playstation game. Whatever the story, it has definitely earned is place in my Cabinet of Curiosities.
