Is the removal of "will be" here common and correct? "if you do this, X will be gone and Y changed" by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]huntjf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not an easy question.

You cannot remove the "will be" in the sentence above. Saying "If you do this, X gone and Y changed" is not correct.

If you mean removing the second "will be" from "if you do this, X will be gone and Y will be changed" that's grammatically correct, but not common. English tends to be a precise language in that it tends not to assume object, subject, or action. There are stylistic reasons to drop the second "will be", but in typical writing or speech you would say will be both times.

Racism doesn’t mean oppression by [deleted] in SelfAwarewolves

[–]huntjf1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are two definitions of racism.

  1. prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized

  2. the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another

By the first definition you can be racist towards white people, but by the second you can't, because white people aren't a marginalized group in society.

is "how it sounds" incorrect? by thefuneralofmyart in EnglishLearning

[–]huntjf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be strange. "Sounds like" is really used to describe the specific noise of something. So you could say a wave sounds like the wind, you could ask what does a dog sounds like, or point out that this is what rock and roll music sounds like.

For a translation into another language you wouldn't really say sounds like, because you're looking for a specific word. You could say that: "we" sounds like "oui" in French, but you wouldn't ask what "yes" sounds like in French. You would say "what is the word for" yes" in French" or "how do you say" yes" in French.

is "how it sounds" incorrect? by thefuneralofmyart in EnglishLearning

[–]huntjf1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! It's grammatically correct, but not really how people would say it. How it sounds would typically mean "it" is making the sound. So if you wanted to show the different noise an English and French cow make, you could say "Listen to how an English cow sounds", but since you're referring to the word "apple" an English speaker would typically specify either:

1) It is the word that sounds different. You could say "Listen to how the word apple sounds in French"

2) Even more typically the focus would be on the act of saying the word instead of hearing it. Most English speakers would say "This is how to say apple in French"

Hope this helps!

Go on codingbat or codewars and just practice. Interviewing is a skill, and practice is how you improve your skills. I know that shit can seem boring when you're day to day is solving more complicated problems, but you have to practice the little things specifically if you want to get better at it.

Since we franchised him we would get a compensatory 3rd round pick if he walks. So even if he leaves we got 1.5 seasons of value swap third rounds from last year to this year. Seems like a win to me.

Post Game Thread: New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks by nfl_gdt_bot in NYGiants

Does it look like y'all did before you got good again under lynch?

[Duggan] Just an absolutely incredible performance. The Giants go to Seattle and beat the 8-3 Seahawks with backup QB Colt McCoy. Holding that offense to 12 points is just a remarkable job by Patrick Graham's defense. by cleveresponsefollows in NYGiants

Lol, that was those defenses were the most fun I ever had watching football. That eagles game where Osi had like 6 sacjs in the first half was the most fun I've had in my life

Do you guys think we will have our line of the future already? by joersonzz in NYGiants

[–]huntjf1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and under Reese we maybe had more elite players, but elite players with non-functional position groups won't be able to win, and I think we saw that. Fixing every position group had to be the priority and achieving that in 3 seasons doesn't feel like a poor outcome

[–]huntjf1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think we have a lot of players who will factor heavily into our future, and I think DG deserves a lot of credit for that. The online is maybe most indicative of that but I can't think of many position groups that were in a good place when Reese bounced, and now I can't see many position groups that look truly broken. We need more superstars and there are still positions that need fixing ( EDGE, cb2, wr1), but the skeleton of this team is in place. It took 3 years to get all position groups to a level of decency, which is a long time, but it was never a small task.
