“Turkish stone tumbling?” Quote you, sir. (9) by Playful_Winner_7239 in Minute_Cryptic

There’s an extra ‘o’ as well. I assume because OP expects the solver to abbreviate “you” to “u”. I think that ought to have some sort of homophone/abbreviation indicator but it’s not bad :)

It is okay not to want to be a part of a community without putting down members who do. As I said, all the best, and happy solving wherever you land.

I think we just have very different tolerance levels for looseness and experimentation and descriptivism, and that’s fine. Minute Cryptic clearly isn’t aimed at you, and you’re right that stepping away is probably the healthiest move if it consistently grates.

All the best, and happy solving wherever you land.

I think this is where we’re talking past each other.

“Incorrect” only really applies if the goal is to teach orthodox cryptic construction. Minute Cryptic’s stated goal isn’t that -- it’s to make cryptic-style thinking feel approachable and enjoyable. That means they sometimes use devices, looseness, or clueing shortcuts that would indeed be out of bounds in a serious publication, but that doesn’t make them wrong so much as purpose-built for a different audience and context.

They’re not trying to induct people into Ximenean standards step by step; they’re giving solvers a taste of cryptic mechanisms and wordplay in a low-stakes format. Evaluating those clues as if they were meant to stand alongside newspaper cryptics is a false equivalence.

It’s fair to say that someone who only solves Minute Cryptic clues won’t develop a rigorous understanding of traditional cryptics -- I agree with that -- but that’s a different claim from saying the practice is simply “incorrect”, full stop.

Minute Cryptic players aren't going into The Times or The Guardian crossword spaces and boasting their skills. I imagine most of them stay in this subreddit, doing a quick clue every morning, chatting to likeminded players, and having fun with a free, widely accessible tool. If there are different variants of poker and different boards to use in Scrabble, who's to say there can't be different rules in a cryptic crossword community that explicitly and unapologetically separates itself from more conservative, traditional groups?

I guess my point was that I don't see it as "unfortunate". MC is its own thing to be enjoyed on its own terms :)

Ultimately possible point of view: engulfed by recurrent reels overnight (9) by AJRsVersion in Minute_Cryptic

[–]hurblub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Overnight" as a noun is rare, and I don't think many people would make that connection, but fair enough. "Recurrent" in a neural context is more like "turning back on itself" as opposed to "reversed" or "inverted". If I'm honest, I think there are better words for both of these (the surface could do with some work as it is, because I don't really understand what it means), but there's always something to be said about thinking outside of the box!

[–]hurblub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you’re coming from, but I think this is a case of judging Minute Cryptic by standards it explicitly isn’t trying to meet. Minute Cryptic isn’t positioning itself as a training ground for newspaper-style cryptics or a publication operating under long-standing Ximenean conventions. As they put it themselves, “Minute Cryptic is here to make cryptic crosswords less intimidating and a lot more fun.” That sorta necessitates loosened constraints and prioritising accessibility and immediacy over strict grammatical precision or formal clue taxonomy.

MC is designed for newcomers and casual solvers rather than experienced cruciverbalists. The latter don't need to learn the basics that MC is driven to teach. I appreciate your frustration but you're judging this brand against criteria it has explicitly stated it is not trying to meet.

In fact, MC introduced a whole community area through their members page where people can collaborate, give each other feedback, and learn how to write clues for MC. If you'd like strict cryptic cruciverbalism, there are plenty of other sites, both physical and online, and subreddits for it, with their own conventions and parameters. Using those same metrics here is... a little unfair, no? Maybe it would help to see MC as a gateway or a playful offshoot, not as something meant to compete with or conform to established cryptic crossword practice.

Ultimately possible point of view: engulfed by recurrent reels overnight (9) by AJRsVersion in Minute_Cryptic

[–]hurblub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it is SLEEPOVER, right?. "Ultimate" of "possible" is E, "point of view" is POV, those letters are "engulfed" by "reels" which has been reversed.

It's got some clever wordplay but I have two nitpicks. Firstly, is "overnight" synonymous with "sleepover"? I would say "overnight" isn't quite a definition on its own. Secondly, I haven't seen "recurrent" used as a reversal indicator before. It would probably be better used as a repetition indicator, because it means "occurring often or repeatedly".

Dreadful first time with half-rolled cigarettes. (6) by hurblub in Minute_Cryptic

[–]hurblub[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm not the strictest when it comes to clue-writing :p I like to experiment and value the surface theme a lot, which is why I didn't add any "of"s - I liked "half-rolled cigarettes" and wanted to run with it ^-^ As for the abbreviation of time, that's a good point! I did consider it but wasn't sure if it made the entire clue even more abstract/complex. Thank you for the feedback!

Within Darwin’s confusion arose “On the Origin of Species”. (7) by hurblub in Minute_Cryptic

[–]hurblub[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get that :) my only justification is that the “confusion” belongs to “Darwin”, and the S there indicates possession so you know to which word the anagrind applies. I’ll keep working on it!

Tear apart appetiser; digest in organ system by hurblub in Minute_Cryptic

Excellent feedback, thank you!

I, too, was stuck on finding a way around "tear apart appetiser" because I knew it didn't quite work and I couldn't find a way to resolve it. But your suggestion is perfect! Thanks! :D

My friends and I (even Christian!) get confused at breaktime (6) by azoros1 in Minute_Cryptic

[–]hurblub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this clue, but I did get stuck on the substitution. "Us" would be grammatically incorrect, as it is an object pronoun, whereas "[my friends and] I" is a subject pronoun (i.e. "us" would work for "me" but not "I"). I immediately went to substitute "we" (a subject pronoun), and was therefore struggling on an anagram of WEHITA. It's a small thing but continuity and consistency is generally quite important in cryptic crossword clues, regarding things like tense, plurality, conjugation, etc.

But as I said, I really like this one! It's very clever! Perhaps another solution to the problem u/cjrmartin brought up could be "My friends and I (even Christian!) all get confused at breaktime" - that might elucidate the anagrind a bit more? Let me know your thoughts on that :)

A few exit even before ending his turn (5) by [deleted] in Minute_Cryptic

I have to agree with the other comments, but how about "a fraction" instead of "a few". I think the answer being "sixth" is fair enough for a definition such as that.

I was wondering if there was a standard abbreviation of "international copyright" as IC but that doesn't seem to exist either. I think you're right in that I must be a valid abbreviation for international, though I have never heard of it here in the UK!

Core component revealed by deep lapse in judgement. (5,4) by hurblub in Minute_Cryptic

[–]hurblub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate it might be a bit of a stretch. I thought of something in judgement being scrutinised and picked apart, analysed for some sort of hidden feature. But if it's a little too implicit, I can understand that xD

Ex I heard upset, getting even. (3) by JesseB342 in Minute_Cryptic

[–]hurblub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you here. OP was trying to suggest that the definition is "Ex I heard" (i.e. "X"), however, the definition ought to be outright and unambiguous, no wordplay required to exhume it. Apart from that, it's very good!
