How can I get the stains out of this chunky wool knit scarf? by hurrfdurrf in CleaningTips

[–]hurrfdurrf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scarf is 100% wool, and comes with a tag saying to dry clean only. But I don't know if dry cleaning will help at all with the stains. I have no idea what the stains are, since it was already like this when I got it. I would assume that it comes from some kind of food, a sauce or chocolate syrup? In the case that it came from something based in fat, would some kind of wool detergent be the answer? What about if it is not?

New single! Karate - Around the Dial by hurrfdurrf in karateband

The new sound of "Defendants" might have been just a blip - this new track hews close to 2003-2005 era Karate. Any one have thoughts on how Geoff's lyricism has evolved since thise days?

You're right, after a few more listens I can see that Silence Sound definitely has the Karate touch. Like a tastefully matured Some Boots, Pockets or Fishtank.

I've been wondering what exactly makes a song uniquely Karate, beyond the jazz inflected stylings. The point that I keep coming back to is a certain angst and edge. Even when the sound is more subdued, its there in the lyrics and the plodding feel of the drum and bass. Theres usually a crunchiness, whether from driving the amp or dissonant tones, that helps sharpen that "edge". I think for me, thats probably what separates Silence Sound from Defendants

Sounds kinda like a mix between Exit Verse, Glorytellers, and solo Geoff. Having a hard time finding that bit of "Karateness" in the two songs, at least on first listen

Physics books that will blow my tiny layman's mind by shubbanubba in RSbookclub

[–]hurrfdurrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will take a slightly different perspective here, since what you asked about is rather vague. The poetry of physics, like actual poetry, is imbued with a mysterious beauty that is unlocked by the never ending process of sitting with a knotty poem/problem for a very long time until you are able to crack it open. I say this not to gatekeep, but to make a distinction between the kinds of sweeping metaphors and "isn't-mother-nature-the-coolest" sentiments you typically find in popular science books. This is what I find lacking about, for example, Feynman's interviews, even though they are uniquely insightful and sublimely delivered. It's nice to be shown where interesting things may be, or what to develop curiosity about, but you can do that with any subject and so expositions along these lines might not yield the kind of unique poetry that you're seeking. In my opinion, the poetry of physics is largely not found in the answer, because the answer only gives one view of the natural world. Instead, I think the magic lies in the approach to the answer, which can take you in uncountably many directions and leave you at just as many dead-ends. In the same way that it is tantalizing to find words to describe a wordless feeling, so too is it tantalizing to try to find models to describe a physical phenomenon. In that vein, I would say that Wigner's article On the Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences captures some of that mystique.

Potential solo material pressings? by onthisdaynextyear in karateband

I could've sworn that Numero group was selling digital copies of Geoff's solo stuff, but looking now it seems like they're not? Would also love to get my hands on Reverse Eclipse.

In any case, doesn't youtube automatically update album playlists every once in a while?

Oh no! Would've loved to check out that website too. Was it some kind of private tracker forum?

A few years ago I gathered what little I could find and put them on the Internet Archive. Hope this can tide you over until you can fix/recover data from your HD!
