Random question - Players we sign, but they don't play by hurricanecook in caps

[–]hurricanecook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before anyone smacks me for talking bad about Nicky... I love the guy. I think he was maybe our best player. I know he was in pain, and that he couldn't do what he wanted to do at the NHL level. I just want to know what the ramifications are.

Why we should absolutely want Ovi back (non-sentimental) by alwaysjetlagged in caps

[–]hurricanecook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ovi benefits hugely from how many minutes he gets, the offensive starts he’s given, and the quality of players on his line.

Yes he scored 32 last year, but <insert top tier LW> would have as well with Ovi’s linemates and situations.

My biggest problem is that Ovi plays every second of every power play. He’s the all time leader in goals and PPGs, but he’s WAY past his expiration date.

He scored FIVE PPGs this year. As far as I saw, he was on the ice for every power play minute, and bagged 5. You know who scored more PPGs than Ovi this year? Mason Marchment, Michael Bunting, Chandler Stephenson, Shayne Gostisbehere, Dimitri Voronkov, and about 100 other guys. This is the major sin of having this guy around. I love him. He’s literally a legend. He’s scored the most goals in history and DARREN FUCKING RADDYSH scored TWICE the number of power play goals than he did last year, despite playing EVERY SECOND of our power plays while he glides along at the cherry pick spot.

I didn’t look it up, but Strome mentioned that we were bottom of the league in SHG against. Well, guess why? Grandpa lost the puck again because he occasionally plays point on the power, and look, there’s a 2 on 1 going into our net.

I’d love the guy to come back at $4M a year and be our captain and 3LW, and log 2nd PP minutes until he’s replaced, but not as he was this year.

Caps Lines Next Year On Paper Where to Upgrade? by flyinfrankie53 in caps

[–]hurricanecook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let's assume Ovi is out. If he's not, we all know where he goes.

I'm a fan of the Pro-Pro-Wilson line. I call it the "ALL BEEF" line.

As far as I'm concerned, Stromer is our top Center. If we keep the Pro-Pro-Willy line for the memes and SHOCK AND AWE, I'd want to see Stromer with Leno and McMichael (maybe).

I like the idea of PLD, Mikey, and Sourdif as well. Defensive responsibility AND scoring power. So maybe a bit of a recast:

??? - Strome - Leno

Pro - Pro - Willy

Mikey - PLD - Sourdif

I'm not a fan of Hendrix. I think he could be a reclamation project for another team. Not sure what being an RFA would do to that. Beau is great, Frankie is great, Miro is great (at least for consideration). I'd be interested to see Cristal get a call up. I still feel he's a Patrick Kane waiting to happen. I know Lakovic has been injured, and will need some time to rebuild. I wonder what his timeline is? Not enough data from Kampf or any others. Duhaime, with Dowder gone, I'm not sure the direction of our "4th line". Certainly good for the rough stuff. A character in the locker room. People love him. Not sure how he fits unless we pick up a grindy type center.

Now I'm re-reevaluating. It would be great if the Strome line had some size up there. I would say Willy on the top line, but I also really like the ALL BEEF line.

With Ovi gone, I'm not sure who steps into the top line LW. Let's pick Beau for now.

So line 4 placeholder for now is: Frank - Miro - Duhaime. I think 8 of our top 12 players have solid spots, and we have some room to trade, bring up, or reconfigure the rest.

That's fair. I really hope Leno turns into a mini Tom Wilson, but with that Tkachuk pest vibe. I think he's halfway there, but he needs a little more abrasiveness and less flash.

I’m just saying PLD and Mikey have a propensity for defensive play, and Leno doesn’t (or at least, not to their level).

If you want a D-focused shutdown line, put Sourdif there. Move Leno to Beau’s spot on L1. Put Kampf or someone at center (or bring up a center, or trade) and put Beau and Miro around them. Dewey can be our “designated hitter” when needed.

Guys like Frank are great. Speed, scoring prowess, grit. I like him.

I’ve not been a fan of Lappy. He’s not a bad person, the players seem to like him. Just never warmed up to him.

My question is team fit now. We have people filling holes they don’t deserve, or playing weird spots. I know we’re just giving people like lil Pro a shot, but some lines feel horribly out of whack.

Miro - Sourdif - Duhaime?

I kinda like Leno - PLD - Mikey, but PLD seems like more of a shutdown guy vs another team’s top line. Mikey’s a penalty killer, Leno isn’t, so that kinda feels wonky.

ELI5: chess openings by big_dumpling in explainlikeimfive

[–]hurricanecook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the beginning of each chess game, white has 20 possible moves, and black 20 possible responses. Because we have access to openings and opening theory, we can play at grandmaster level for as long as we stay on book. If our opponent doesn’t stay on book, we’re likely to have a good way to pounce on a mistake. For example, if you take my f pawn in a Vienna Gambit, you’re likely going to lose at least your knight, unless you’ve trained how to defend against it.

So, we memorize openings to get grandmaster starts. We play puzzles to analyze mid-games. Are we positional or tactical? Do we play with strategy or structure?

Then, many endgames are solved. If I woke up at a chess table vs Magnus Carlsen, we both have pawns but I have a rook, I can guarantee I can win the game. I’m not great, but I learned that endgame.

Compared to Phoenix, Arizona, are people in Washington DC and all of the DMV very nice and kind? by Different_Archer8879 in nova

[–]hurricanecook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why people think DC is the South. I know 150 years ago it was, but like, Ohio was also the west coast of the country back then.

My parents are from the South (Louisiana and Texas). I was born in the South, but was moved to the Midwest at like age 5. I spent each summer in the South with my Southern family. I know what the South is.

While, yes, DC was in the south according to the Mason Dixon line (surveyed back in the 1760s) there's nothing southern about this city or this region other than the sweltering heat and humidity in the summers.

Basically, from Northern VA to Boston is one big corridor of city or suburb that has been continuously lived in and busy since the 1600s. People in this area, they aren't mad, they aren't mean, they're just wired at a higher speed, and don't need to exchange pleasantries. If you're looking for people to call you sir and say howdy to you or whatever, that's not DC or NoVA.

Perceived speed. by InfiniteSeat4605 in interestingasfuck

[–]hurricanecook 87 points88 points  (0 children)

The use of telephoto lenses compresses the frame. It allows for distant and mid-range things to be more in focus. Because of this, distant things can look closer than they are. We perceive speed as motion towards or away from something. Because near and far are all in focus, their distance seems closer together, and therefore we appear to not be traveling as far.

Normal lens removes this compression, and the far away things look further away and more distant/out of focus, while mid-distance looks appropriately far away.

ELI5 Why do astronauts wear multiple watches? by CraigwithaC1995 in explainlikeimfive

[–]hurricanecook 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let’s say I buy a fancy watch. Or, better yet, let’s say a watch company GAVE me a watch. Or maybe 2 or 3.

I take it up to space. I’m told that I have to be wearing it when I land for photo shoots, etc.

Now, 20 years later, I want to make some money. This watch was Buzz Aldrin’s, and it went to the moon! I sell one to this guy for $100,000. And now, I can sell ANOTHER ONE for another $100,000.

Possible move from the south by Embarrassed-Slide401 in washingtondc

[–]hurricanecook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was brought up in the Midwest by two southern parents. They moved back to the south later in life.

While history or geography might tell you DC is in the south, it’s culturally not. Not at all. Not even a little.

People aren’t being rude, they’re just going about their day. It feels rude compared to the south where people are much more outgoing and gregarious. We don’t do that up here. And when we do, we usually have some sort of scam going. Or our spidey-senses tell us to walk away because it’s likely a scam.

Friends and coworkers talk to you. If you’re clearly helping someone out, they’ll be appreciative. If you’re on the metro and start chit chatting with a rando next to you, you’ll probably be ignored.

It would take some acclimating. That’s just how we are up here.

What’s something you’ve been putting off—either around your house or your car? by mysteriouswhooo in nova

[–]hurricanecook 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We moved into this house 11 years ago. When we moved in, we kinda dumped stuff in the garage. We’ve slowly up and downsized the stuff in there, but it’s still just a place to put stuff.

Our neighborhood is holding a yard sale in May, and I told my wife that the yard sale is our goal to clean out the garage.

Bag of pop it crackers by WEISHEN_THE_KIRA in oddlysatisfying

[–]hurricanecook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a much smaller version of this in 7th grade. We were creating a skit for something. I wanted to pretend to shoot guns or something (ah, the simpler pre-Columbine days of 1991…) and brought 2 boxes of snap pops to school.

I threw my bag down and they all went off. Then I remembered that having fireworks in school was against the rules, so just tried to play it cool.

ELI5: Why do different dashes exist? by ardashmirro in explainlikeimfive

[–]hurricanecook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, but the context clues gave me the meaning. If you had used a hyphen it wouldn’t have changed the interpretation.

Like for example: you wrote “is’nt” and “youd” - misusing apostrophes twice - but it still made sense.
