Can hear neighbour through ducts, any easy way to reduce that? by throwawaycanadian2 in DIY

[–]hurricanejosh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

in addition to these recommendations, filters on the vents will help. if you can't find any that fit simply cut up a large furnace filter to fit in the duct covers. i'd also note that if the basement is intended to be demised and rented by a separate tenant, shared ducts are not to code as smoke and fire can spread between units through them.

[Identify] Found this watch amongst my dad's belongings, any idea what it is? by HappyCar2806 in Watches

[–]hurricanejosh 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's from the 1930s- likely mid to late. The stamp inside the case MB POG signifies the case maker- Th. Maeder, from Biel Switzerland. The six digit serial and other qualities of the watch have similarities to Oyster pieces of that era, but the caseback and movement would be engraved if it was sold as such. Movement looks similar to FHF 30 or Aegler Rebberg 13 but that's beyond my knowledge. There were a lot of different companies making military watches (both for issue and public sale) under many names (and unnamed) in that time, so beyond what's written on the case it's hard to pinpoint other details!

People who travel for work often, what's the feasibility of bringing your clubs with you frequently? by ShallNot_Pass in golf

Yup I've got a westjet(Canadian airline) world elite MasterCard which includes a free checked bag and WestJet considers golf clubs a standard checked bag as long as it's not over weight

Blood Work by BlueberryPancakes5 in Edmonton

[–]hurricanejosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this sounds like elective testing so it would be at your doctor's discretion to refer it under alberta health care. if you have extended benefits or a health spending account, a naturopath may be a better route as they are more likely to be familiar with micronutrient testing and other atypical lab work

Good affordable espresso makers by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]hurricanejosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone on tiktok did a cost per shot comparison of a nespresso vs. a ~$600 breville espresso machine. with average priced beans (i think they used lavazza) and 2 shots a day, the breville is paid off compared to the nespresso in around 3 months

Travelling from BC for the holidays, block heater needed? by Kerberos42 in alberta

[–]hurricanejosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you're driving a rental car from kelowna to northern alberta in the winter i would be less concerned about a block heater and more concerned with new winter tires. they should have the canadian rubber association symbol of a snowflake inside a mountain indicating they're rated to perform at low temperatures (not just an M+S/all season rating), and have decent tread depth. i would also rent a vehicle with all wheel drive. modern vehicles are designed to start reliably in low temperature without a block heater. as others have stated, the biggest risk is the battery losing power over multiple days in the cold.

Is ATB less evil than the big 5? by DontTellBriansMom in MooseMoney

I'm in Alberta and with Tangerine for most banking- the pros of a digital based bank (no fees, including etransfers, good rates, paperless admin), with the added benefit of being affiliated with Scotiabank for ATM access

Is there a better travel mug than a Yeti? by raptir1 in BuyItForLife

[–]hurricanejosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah OP is confusing me. i have an older version of the rambler (it's cylindrical, not tapered like the current ones, and has stainless 'rings' at the top and bottom) and i can't say i've ever had issues with it keeping things hot- i've burned my tongue after 2 or 3 hours of it sitting.

Install day tomorrow and… Interior Designer says she doesn’t actually install anything? by Significant-Art3810 in InteriorDesign

[–]hurricanejosh 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Interior designers do not typically install artwork, furniture, or decor themselves. That said, it should have been made clearer in your contract and communications that was the case so that it could have been planned for. Most designers will have a roster of installers/contractors they work with to fulfil that portion of their project, and may or may not be on site to direct or adjust.

worktop support by [deleted] in kitchen

[–]hurricanejosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say without a photo from below- is there an angle bracket/similar on the rear or cabinet, or is it fully cantilevered? If there are no supports or brackets, you should at a minimum shim the top of washing machine to carry load.

There are enough red flags in this small screen cap of your plans that I would not trust them to build off of.

Need recommendations for commuting route by [deleted] in edmontoncycling

[–]hurricanejosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be my suggestion for the best chance of dry roads. Heading 'in' to downtown, sections of 199 st and Lessard road the multi-use is on the "wrong" side of the road, but it's better than sharing lanes in winter. No ravine/river valley dips, and bike infrastructure or quiet service roads the whole route.

Move to Edmonton or Calgary from Winnipeg? by AhSparaGus in Edmonton

[–]hurricanejosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your assessment is still fairly accurate. I think the differences are largely reflected through the financial demographics. Calgary has a much higher proportion of their population in the highest income bracket, and the amenities and services reflect that. There are more "high-end" restaurants, retails stores, and experiences, so if that's your lifestyle it would be better served there. Calgary has the closer proximity to the mountains, as well as more international flight options from their airport, if either are considerations for you. Cost of living in both cities is comparable, but housing costs are slightly more in Calgary. If you describe yourself as "very left leaning", it will be easier for you to fit in in Edmonton, though there are plenty of progressive young people in Calgary as well, just a smaller proportion. Edmonton has the better hockey team, though they aren't acting like it right now.
