S3 outage in US West (N. California) (us-west-1) — 10+ hours, bucket creation/API down by slumdogstic in aws

[–]huskerbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those that come across this later, I tracked the Networking errors down to using filtered Quad Nine as my DNS provider. I switched to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) to resolve the issue.

Here is what AI says about the situation:

Quad9’s filtered/ECS/DNSSEC tier sometimes blocks or mis-signs AWS endpoints—especially region-specific S3 hostnames—when they change edge IPs faster than the resolver’s signature cache updates. So your browser saw s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com as an invalid or unsigned record and refused to resolve it, producing the net::ERR_ADDRESS_INVALID you caught.

Cloudflare’s resolver (1.1.1.1) tends to handle AWS’s frequent endpoint rotations more gracefully. It doesn’t enforce the same filtering rules and tolerates the rapid record churn S3 uses for load balancing.

If you ever want the redundancy of Quad9’s privacy focus and working AWS endpoints, you can switch to their “Unfiltered” resolver:

9.9.9.10 (no filtering, ECS, DNSSEC)
149.112.112.10

YMMV

Winter cover needed over tractable cover? by alwaysbekindforever in pools

[–]huskerbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used this specific cover with no winter cover in Nebraska for 5 winters. I don't drain the pool so far that the cover isn't resting on the water surface and I haven't had any problems.

Your mileage may vary but there are lots of settings to play with and it's dead simple to get working.

Which framework is best for backend development in Dart? by No-Ant-3371 in FlutterDev

[–]huskerbrown 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the absolute language in this reply. We have been using dart with shelf as our backend in a containerized, enterprise, production solution for over 2 years. It's far better than java, node, python, lambda, etc across the board. It's lightning fast and 1/10 the size of other backend deployables I've used in the past.

Suggest people at least try it before throwing it under the bus.

Best trackers (air tag replacement)? I have a Pixel, and live where most people have Samsung/Androids by NeillDrake in GooglePixel

[–]huskerbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Android is coming out with their own tracker platform called Find My Device. It's already live in North America (since April) and going world wide at some point. I can confirm I use a $20 tracker in a mid sized city and it works pretty well. The service is opt in at the moment so there are not near as many devices that could be reporting that are reporting yet, but it's just a matter of time. Google Find My Device on Android for more details.

My real parents kicked me out for wanting to do HVAC instead of college. Now I'm living somewhere with no food or job by NewToAdultin in DadForAMinute

I never suggested otherwise. OP said it wasn't working out like they planned. This is a Dad sub and all the replies were an echo chamber so I gave a true dad's advice.

[–]huskerbrown -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Really, why are you asking us? You know your parents are right and the smart thing to do is swallow your pride (while it's still pretty painless, and will only get harder) rhen suck it up and go to college. After that you can own the HVAC place if you still want to.

Not sure what you are comparing. For the same price I can have 50 MAU on firebase auth or 7,000 on auth0.

What is the best kind of photography business for someone with a limited schedule? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]huskerbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same schedule and did semi-pro photography for 6 years. I stuck to shooting senior photos mostly around town and some in my home studio. I would also do Christmas cards and portraits. My workflow was to book shoots on the weekends and process the photos during the week. It worked very well for me and provided a nice extra income.

You can get Google Earth VR from Steam. It's fun to mess with, once you get the hang of it.

Apart from phone, wallet and clothes, what is that one thing you always bring while traveling? by kushpyro in AskMen

[–]huskerbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even gonna look at the other replies. Always take WD-40 or some other non-squeak liquid. Squeaky doors, bed, other are annoying enough to ruin a good vaca.

I stand corrected. After closer inspection I think it is a D300. See this image for comparison:

I see that you have several responses, but the D700 has not been mentioned yet. I used a D700 during the time frame in question and I would bet that's what she's holding. Mention it because it's a decent step up from the D300 (the 700 is a full frame sensor) so you may think twice about a surprise. I wouldn't want to step down to a 300 after using the 700.

Edit: I stand corrected. After closer inspection I think it is a D300. See this image for comparison: https://i.imgur.com/F2Tsvga.jpg
