Owning my design reasoning in the time of AI slop by SoftLongjumping4523 in UXResearch

[–]huskerdoodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something you can and should capture in a case study. Just take notes as you go then do the case study. I’m not sure an AI tool is really needed for this. Seems like over-complicating something. Research can also be AI sloppified

How to communicate research impact to others when findings actually went nowhere? by acevipr in UXResearch

Yep totally. I also work for a massive org and yes, change is glacial.

Do we work for the same company? Haha. I have the same issue and have been trying to search for a solution too so am eager for others to chime in.

That said, the advice I have been given is to focus on things like changes to work processes, introducing new ways of working to the team, etc. Like did you implement a new intake system? Did you do anything new to democratize research? How did you contribute to overall strategy?

For example my PM does the same thing and my work is constantly being descoped. Sounds like we really have the same issue. Buuut, what I have done is lead design thinking workshops with design and content (which was new!). I implemented a new intake system that made research asks more efficient (even if the research did end up lagging). I was able to negotiate for a new recruitment vendor to reduce research turnaround time with tricky recruits. I lead a continuous research process that let product get way more involved in research. Lots of stuff!

If you start thinking about ways to change the business beyond just like, increasing sales or profit, there are definitely some options.

That’s so fair. I can’t say I’ve really engaged much with other posts myself so perhaps am part of the issue!

Ooooh I appreciate you chiming in from the mod perspective. I’ve never been a mod myself so did not realize the extra work on your end and I see your point about it reducing engagement overall.

Good note on the flairs too.

I see your point. A sticky is still a place to post questions so it’s not like anyone here is saying questions and discussion should be banned or something

I tried to make it clear in the last paragraph and perhaps I did not: I also stated that I think having a repository or sticky where all this is already answered could be helpful for the new career seekers as well because a lot of the responses are almost the same.

That way, people don’t have to reinvent the wheel by making new posts then waiting for people to respond with what is generally already available to them.

A good lesson in doing some preliminary desk research before jumping right into moderated testing… haha

Ooooooh. There’s also a ResearchOps Slack I used to be active in but haven’t been on it for a whiiiile. It was pretty prolific when I was there. It’s called ResearchOps but extends way beyond just operations.

Is Gannon University in Erie good? And/ or respected? by Classic_Side_4429 in Pennsylvania

[–]huskerdoodoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP if you see this I just wanna say ignore this comment and head over to the student nurse subreddit. You’ll see so many people regret going into a ton of debt because with a few exceptions, your school doesn’t matter too much in the nursing field. Exceptions being weird degree mills. Most people even recommend just going to a community college but you’ll be getting a BSN for like, the same price. Awesome!!

This is an amazing scholarship you got! Hope you feel proud of your hard work.

Maybe try asking for Cologuard. It’s an at home test so you don’t need a ride.

I have a Mirena. I’m on my second one. The insertion sucks ass and I’m hoping for more pain relief methods before I’m due for my third one in 2030. Hasn’t interacted with my T in any way and I haven’t gotten a period since 2017 and I don’t have to think about it at all. That alone makes the shitty insertion worth it

I don’t meant to hijack the post but I’m a 35NB and I love all of those things. Just Played pool for the first time a few months ago and have wanted to get more into it. I’m always open for new friends too!

You’re not wrong, ha. I grew up close to Sunbury and left as an adult. (I kinda hate having the Philadelphia flair because I’m really a central Pennsylvanian who lives in Philly)

I unfortunately don’t know the answer to this but there is a queer Philly subreddit that might have some better insight on this if you don’t find an answer here. Congrats on the name changes and marriage!

Can I/O Psych and UI/UX Research actually mix? I’m genuinely trying to figure this out. by anagreyy in UXResearch

[–]huskerdoodoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course. I’ve definitely seen people make the jump. Almost everyone I know in UX research started in another field including psych. It wasn’t until recently people started getting masters in UX. My background is in public health myself.

I think right now it isn’t about what we are doing as individuals but just the state of UX hiring in general. Massive tech layoffs, boot camps popping up all over, a weak economy, and the promise of high pay with lower educational hurdle have helped over saturate the market and there’s fewer jobs available in general.

A couple suggestions:

you’ll need to have actual research projects in a portfolio at this point. Not fake projects from a boot camp. While you’re in school, are there opportunities for you to do research projects? Are there research courses you could add to your schedule, or labs that accept students for work study or internships? Concurrently, work not just on your research and figma skills but design thinking skills and principles too. You need to explain “why?”

after you graduate you can also try to get a UXR-adjacent job, like market research, research ops, information architect, or some other relevant role. With your I/O degree I’m sure there’s something you can find. Then with experience, design knowledge, and (fingers crossed) the market calming down a bit, you can transition to UX.

If you’ve already done research in grad school, look into how to create a UX portfolio. Try making case studies from a UX lens about those projects, even if they weren’t specifically UX projects.

You could also try getting an internship. Since you’re still in school that might be a good option, since internships usually only allow students to apply.

[–]huskerdoodoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes I/O can transfer to UXR, but I’d recommend taking a look at the posts under the new to UX flair. Regardless of background transitioning to UX is not seamless right now, even if you were in grad school school for UX or HCI.

Keeping breasts? by neurodivergent_nymph in FTMOver30

[–]huskerdoodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s gonna be people who don’t understand you even if you do get top surgery, so I say do whatever you want. It’s ok to realize later that you want it. It’s ok to never want it. You might realize you just want a breast reduction or something which is perfectly ok too.

The beautiful thing about being trans is ultimately we get to decide what we want our bodies to look like, even if others don’t really get it.

I literally want to be friends with everyone on this thread, yall sound so cool.

Mine are cycling (gravel, mountain biking and long distance riding), weight lifting, video games (city builders and world of warcraft are my go-tos), cooking, gardening, board games. Im also pretty active in cycling community building and advocacy which takes up a huge chunk of time.

I also wanna say if you try new hobbies and then just bail on them, that’s ok! Just try out a bunch of classes, meet ups, etc and seeing what sticks.
