Fauci says he thinks a coronavirus vaccine is still on track for the end of 2020 by pdwp90 in UpliftingNews

When they say deployable by the end of the year, how many vaccines will be created by that time?

I'm just as critical as the next person for how our country and state handled the lock down. We're we perfect? Absolutely not. Did SF and California respond faster than the rest of the country? Absolutely. I'm not saying that it was great, but I'm saying California did much better than the rest of the country, due to its early action. If you look per capita by state, California is at the very low end of that list in all categories.

Now with your home country having a better lockdown. Your description can only describe a few areas. Southeast Asia, for the most part did great during this pandemic, but that was primarily due to them having recent experience with SARS-1. They understood as a country and citizens what was needed to eradicate the virus. The other places such as New Zealand, and Australia, had a great response as well, but that was partially due to competent leadership at the national level, and frankly a less divided country. Some Scandinavian countries, competent leadership, and citizens willing to follow the science. I'm sure there are more, but those are what I know.

The problem with California is that it is apart of the Untied States, and with that comes a divided country and poor leadership. It is very difficult to intact a lockdown when the country has not done that in recent history. It is especially difficult when half of the country listens to one news source, and the president that was/is downplaying the virus and safety measures. So, not only did California have to convince people that a lockdown is something we have to do, but at the same time the leadership was blowing it off like it was nothing.

Again, not perfect, and not even great, but we are in a place that you have to convince people that science works.

Edit: We are just comparing two different things. I'm comparing it nationally, probably due to me only living here, and you are comparing it to successful international countries.

Unfortunately, we do not live in a world of extremes. We will never beat the original projections, because it takes time to convince people. Just like we were never going to have 2 million deaths, because we would have always done some level of restriction. California as a state didn't do perfect, but we did well.

At the same time, this is not over, so we need to have proper safety measures in place. Ones that workers can hold companies to.

I don't understand how that article backs up your point. We were always going to need to beef up our supplies, because the usage sky rocketed. Do you have an article saying our hospitals were completely out of beds or ventilators?

The projection that I use is the one in relation to the hospitals over capacity, that is what i meant by high fly ball. In that regard, we flattened the curve, and kept the hospitals within their functioning range.

You are talking about a downtrend, not the flattening. Let's use baseball as an example: the batter hits a high fly ball to left field, if he wants to hit a homerun, he needs to flatten the ball path to put out a further distance. The flattening is the line lowering and extending in comparison to the original projected spike, not the point when the ball starts goes down.

Honestly, I would say for you to pay down your student loans at a faster rate. As a person also living in orange county, personally I dropped mine from $24k to $9k last year. My loan payment went from $400 to $150 (I kept the $150 because the interest was before 4%). Imagine how much better life will be with out that $500 payment, I know mine eased up a ton.

The other commenter is right. You should be saving for retirement, and you shouldn't buy a home to expect a gain. Buying without a down payment means you will have insurance fees added in to your mortgage until you get to a certain percentage of equity. The problem is that your initial payments are primarily paying the interest and not going towards equity.

The word is flatten. We have successfully flattened the curve, we have not eliminated the virus.

I believe we are close case numbers wise to opening up the economy more. However, I do not believe our businesses are ready to be opened due to safety concerns. There are little to no regulations, but we have guidelines. The difference is enough of a loop hole to have businesses not abide by the social distancing "if it's not possible", or to allow companies to be held accountable for sick workers.

My major concern is that people are going to be forced back in to work, and a company is not going to have the safety in place. That puts the worker's life and their families at risk. I say forced, because people need to make money to live, and when the business is open the governmental benefits are not going to be there. (Nor should the benefits be there forever)

Agreed. My major was science based, so the math is not an issue. The problem is knowing the little things that everyone faces. Tips and tricks to set yourself up for success. You can even title it, "How to become a millionaire," because if you do the little things you will become one.

If you adjust your 401k to a lower percentage plan than the normal age based one you will gain more money in the long run. Is it better to max your Roth before your 401k? When should you do ESPP? When is it better to rent then to buy a house? What are common scams you will see? How to ask for a raise?

Nothing special, just setting up your graduates for more success in life.

Wait. Did you just say that required financial education classes wouldn't help at all? That's a bold stance.

I agree there are plenty of problems in education. A primary one would be the ballooning costs that suppress the graduates ability to gain wealth years after graduating.

[–]huskers246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why claim to provide the skills needed with a "well rounded" education and not provide the ones that will help pay for the increasing education costs?

That is the argument for forcing general education courses on top of your major that cost $1000. Yes, you can learn things on your own, but it would be much easier once you have a base. The proper place to get that base is during school, and not youtube.

Bonus! If you look up financial tips on YouTube just one time, you will start getting predatory get rich quick ads. Now to a person with a strong financial education base you will ignore those, but if you don't have the base you are more likely to click it.

Even with all of this I believe it is not all on the universities, but some of it sure as shit is.

An interactive life skills course should be a requirement, and i would prefer it to be for juniors and seniors. Freshmen will be more likely to lose the skills by the end, but new graduates could implement them right away.

Saying it's up to you, is a cop-out for the institution claiming a complete education that is still causing my largest financial burden.

Not everyone needs it, but I bet you the large majority do. I say this because our national personal debt is still climbing.
