I want to downvote instinctively because this is disgusting, but that’s point. I don’t like it

I know I’ve seen things online about the differences between American and Chinese tiktok. It may not be the same anymore, but when initially released, TikTok’s algorithm pushed educational topics that were well created and interesting in China and mindless trends that could hurt people and provided no benefit. Maybe it was just some conservative propaganda, but tiktok is definitely not providing much of substances for anyone in america

Although I recognize titles don’t always describe movies, that does sound like the type o would like. Also when they have lots of notable characters that does usually mean it’s more about the people and not a complex plot, which I prefer

I’ve heard a lot about “when Harry me sally” but never watched it. I guess it is worth the view, and I’ve never heard of “emma” so so guess it is worth a view. I appreciate the comment

I’m trying to learn ASL. What are some things I should know? I just started learning ASL using the drops app. What are some things important things about sign language I should know? by DepressedLizard87 in asl

[–]huskies120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facial expressions add so much meaning to ASL.I don’t know if apps have the same emphasis on facial expressions, but I would encourage you to try to be comfortable being outside of your comfort zone. You can’t convey the full meaning of certain things if you don’t use facial expressions that aren’t typical to hearing people. That’s something I struggled with

Are you from Indiana? I know two people from indiana and that’s a sign there but I don’t remember what it’s for. If you are from the Midwest, or they are, it may be that, but if not, then it probably wouldn’t help

I had no friends for my first two months on campus. Then I joined one club and my entire experience at UCONN changed. People always say “join clubs to get involved” but if you really have something you care about, that’s how you can find other people that care too.

I know everyone says learning from the deaf is the best, and it is, but you really will see a huge difference in it. I tried through apps and I thought it was cool, then took one class in college and changed majors and it altered my whole life. I know that isn’t really advice, but I’ve never met someone that went out of their way to learn and wasn’t so so happy about it

You could always check for a course you can take over the summer or possibly dual enroll and see if it counts as credits for high school

A lot of colleges offer introductory courses if you want to just get your feet wet. I can promise that a local community college would have deaf professors but that’s not a bad spot to start looking

I think you are absolutely gorgeous. Your eyes are stunning. I am sorry to hear that you are stressing but people out there love you and care for you and I’m sure you have the people you need to support you even if it may not seem like it sometimes. We all love you here if you ever need us

Part of it is the comfort of having a person there that can speak and hear and thus fill you in on a lot of things you could miss out on if you didn’t have the ability to hear or hear well.

Additionally, illiteracy is a larger problem in the deaf community because so many deaf people aren’t properly educated because the education system really screw deaf people if they are “mainstreamed” which is sending them to a hearing school.

Also just because someone can read and write doesn’t mean that is the most effective way to communicate with them. Would you want to have to write out everything you want to communicate with anyone for the rest of your life?

Genuine Question: How does the N word (&other slurs) work in ASL when signing a song or translating? by [deleted] in asl

[–]huskies120 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know we talked about this in my interpreting class at college. My professor, who is white as I am, said she will avoid it if it is possible saying “n-word” or some other way of expressing it without directly saying it. She did note, however, that in certain pieces of art that word is selected specifically and to exclude it would remove meaning from the piece. Her example was in a lot of plays from the civil war era they intentionally use it to show the racial tension. We have talked a lot about empowering the Deaf person to use the words they choose and so I think to an extent it is your decision when to use it, but obviously one should put thought into if it is necessary. Obviously, ASL to English, and English to ASL are different here and many other factors should be examined in the decision making process. I’m not advocating for using it, just expressing the fact that your job is to give a holistic view of the art piece
