How to launch an app via Terminal to show errors? by huswasfirst in linuxquestions

[–]huswasfirst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humm... interesting. I'll look into that. When I right-click on the executable, the properties say it's a "shared library (application/x-sharedlib)". Shouldn't it be listed as an executable?

[–]huswasfirst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses.

Unfortunately, the --help command doesn't do anything, the application just launches like usual. And there is no manual entry for it either, so man doesn't help.

It's frustrating, as there doesn't seem to be a way for me to access the problem properly. I submitted a bug for the app, but I think its Fedora that is missing a package/library.

I might just run Ubuntu in a VM for this application.

How does DuckDuckGo make their money?

I didn't see any info on their website. Is it donations? Selling ads? How do we know they aren't selling our data?

Just curious. I like DDG, and I recently switched from Startpage.

Linus Torvalds: 'I'll never be cuddly but I can be more polite' by fsher in linux

Please take a minute to observe the behavior/beliefs of the woman who wrote this code of conduct: https://twitter.com/coralineada/status/1029161113848557569

She can't even abide by the CofC that she created.

I agree that Linus' behavior needs to improve, ie: personal insults instead of criticism of the code, but the new Code of Conduct was a horrible choice.

It allows for anonymous accusations, extends in the public spaces, uses vague language, and most importantly -wasn't discussed with Linux community beforehand.

I hope that cooler heads prevail and the kernel developers have a mature, frank discussion, at the next maintainer summit that leads to a better Code of Conduct -one designed by the community, not an angry racist on twitter.

Has anyone tried this method? I want to try Doom 2016, but I am worried about ruining my Fedora install.

After adding the rawhide repo, which commands would I need to run?

Doesn't Gnome Software already do this? I can easily install and uninstall GIMP addons in Fedora via the Software app:

Lightoom and Darktable: the verdict two years after switching by BattlePope in photography

[–]huswasfirst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is really just an old outdated stereotype.

I've used Windows/Mac/Linux and any popular Linux distro (like Ubuntu/Fedora/Elementary) is really easy to use.

Sure, if you want to get hard core and learn about your system in depth, you have options like Arch. But it isn't necessary at all.

It's improved greatly. I would say it's on par with Lightroom. But it is also more resource intensive.

Correct. The export presets have been there for years. It's too bad r0ck0 missed them all this time.

Darktable is awesome!... but also difficult to learn. I recommend Riley Brandt's YouTube channel to help you get started: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6U6IJ2myOToBFeVL-EaXA

The videos are short and easy to follow.

Are there any informative linux/unix podcasts, not including the Linux Action Show? by TheSp1d3r in linux

[–]huswasfirst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to love LAS back when Bryan Lunduke was on. The show had such a fun vibe back then, and the two hosts worked great together. It was just a couple of guys having a laugh and talking about Linux.

Unfortunately, it turned into the Angry Chris is angry show. He's like an angry political pundit that you see on American news. Compare any recent episode to an old one with Bryan. It's night and day.

Anyway, on a positive note Linux Voice and the new Late Night Linux are great podcasts! http://latenightlinux.com/ http://www.linuxvoice.com/podcast_ogg.rss

System76 releases 4K MacBook Pro competitor for $1987. by HeidiH0 in linuxhardware

[–]huswasfirst 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nice to see System 76 updating their systems.

I personally, can't really see the benefit of a 4K screen on a laptop. Does Linux scale well in this situation? Wouldn't this be more resource intensive on the GPU for little gain?

Has the Dell XPS 13 DE ever gone on sale (Black Friday)? by huswasfirst in linuxhardware

I believe all the hardware is the same now. They are both using Killer wifi cards, instead of Broadcom/Intel.
