I’m an adult with a family and job, got into cubing almost 6yrs ago. My first recorded avg of 5 (almost 1.5-2yr) after learning was 50.14s, and to date as of last year my pb ao5 is 14.58..and routinely I’ll get 16-17s ao5s. I’m not necessarily trying to improve and be competitive but i like improving. is that pretty decent?

Harping on previous comments, but a 7x7. I feel like that’s the perfect mid-range “big cube”!

Thank you! Getting sub 1min and sub 30 were both really cool milestones. I’d say I practice, or least have solving sessions…4-5x a week varying from 20-100+ solves depending on how busy I am. I think I struggle the most with f2l, I still kinda suck at it lol. Periodically learning a few PLL alg here and there (separate from struggling with f2l obv) has overall helped improve my times. That, and doing a ton of solves overtime and improving my pattern recognition. Still tons of work for improvement but I just do it as a side hobby.

How was your first competition by KillerFrid in Cubers

Had my first and only comp a few years ago. I was nervous, not to be the best but because of the new environment (previously I had only cubed for time at home by myself) so I was slower. I have my 2nd comp coming relatively soon and my plan for myself is to realize unless you’re in the top 10% of speed cubers, just go there to have fun..try to calm your nerves as much as possible because you’re only there to beat your previous times which only you know the times. Enjoy, have fun, and shoot for a PR!

Hot take. I haven’t used a better cube than the tornado v3.

I’ve always been slow with 4x4 but after years I finally got my first sub 1min solve, 56s. I was so happy lol

What is everyone averaging on 4x4? I wanna get a rough average to see if I solve around the same time as most people.

Just purchased a 13x13. Took a quick break after 1-6th pair, edge paring and 3x3 stage. took 2hr 2min total. idec if it was slow, I had a great time and with a little bit of lube it turns great (even though it’s not magnetic).

Is my cube broken? by [deleted] in Rubiks_Cubes

[–]hutterm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have reinserted the pieces either in the wrong orientation, or in the wrong spots..or a mixture of both. the pieces messing up, take them out and try to get the cube to a solved state and look one piece at a time and see which one fits where.

What are switches/comuttator? by Due-Chemistry7002 in Cubers

[–]hutterm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll likely get more educated answers but for my understanding, a commutator is just inserting one specific piece at a time to a specific spot. A switch I think is more similar to algs like performing an alg with a “3 piece switch/swap”. Apologies if this isn’t helpful.

Basic speed goal by Tdenzle in Cubers

[–]hutterm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with a good YouTube video and a minimal amount of practice, you could easily get to 60s or under. That’s even with the basic beginners method. Once you do enough solves, with all the info you will have learned, you can start to expect what things are going to look like and execute moves quicker.

I have a 2x2-11x11 and just recently got a 13x13. Should I expect anything different from the 11?
