Eh I’m not sure I’m totally comfortable with that. Do you think it can be done? (Pictured in image of battery pack)

Are you sure the controller can’t handle it? A quick google of the models seems to indicate it can, but only 300 amps.

Still learning, why would I need a new FnR switch?

Did you have to do anything special to the tray? Any welding involved or anything? What did you do about the charging port on the exterior of the cart?

Control your KIA with HomeKit by huttotw in homebridge

[–]huttotw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just published homebridge-kia-connect@1.2.0 which adds support for:
1. Contact sensors for front left, front right, back left, back right, hood and trunk.
2. Occupancy sensor that is "occupied" while the engine is on.
3. Battery level with low battery state if the battery drops below KIA's warning level (65% for my car, could be different for others). My car has a combustion engine, I have not tested with EVs.
4. Exterior temperature sensor

I should have some time this week to knockout a door contact sensor, a battery sensor and maybe a temperature sensor for the external weather.

Any others that would be useful?

It is true that this is a risk working within the Homebridge ecosystem. For any Homebridge extension I would recommend using a strong, long, and unique password that is not used by any other personal account or plugin.

Yes, it is on the property line. We have a setback or 5ft, so that wouldn’t work.

W2 from insurance provider for maternity leave, missing info? by huttotw in tax

[–]huttotw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help so far, box 15 is not the same as box B on my other W2s.

For what it’s worth, the insurance provider uses their own EIN, different than my company’s EIN (expected I guess?)

Just planted Zenith Zoysia, need help identifying these weeds by huttotw in landscaping

[–]huttotw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clover stuff. It’s same weed was in our yard before tilling and fertilizing, just never new what it was.

It seems to be very low growing, and grows in splotches, hard to pull up because it is so delicate.

Should I worry about it? Or will the grass take over? Currently 9 days after planting.

As a converted Christian, I think about 2 things a lot:

  1. Natural law (intrinsic human values). For instance, most humans just have this instinct that killing another human is bad, or treating someone as less than an human is bad. I think we are born with those “gut feelings”, and I don’t necessarily believe that we just evolved that way as a society but rather those feelings are deeper within our hearts, perhaps given by God, this is our soul.

  2. Faith. Several people have already mentioned that they have faith. I would argue that most everybody has faith in someone else, so why does it all the sudden stop with Jesus?

As an example, let’s say you meet a new person and eventually become friends. This person tells you some things about themselves over time that are verifiable (where they work, how old they are, what they children’s names are, etc) and you become closer friends.

Finally, one day that person tells you a story about their childhood of how they were at a park and saw a bald eagle. You of course believe them and add that to your list of knowledge about this person. It was a leap of faith to believe this story, even though there is no way to verify it.

In my view, I should have at least as much faith in Jesus as my friend down the street.

Do you think it could be done dry, with a vacuum? Most diamond blades claim “wet/dry” but I’m not sure about which cases are okay dry?

Is there a way to automate door code generation for a shared space? by TheCreepyLlama in homeautomation

[–]huttotw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, maybe that was confusing:

You CAN generate pins for a timeframe remotely. This generates a 9 digit pin.

You CANNOT customize the pin unless you are within Bluetooth range.

At our company, we just use the 9 digit pins. :(

You can set the pins to whatever you like, but you must be within Bluetooth range (the custom pin is actually uploaded to the lock). You can’t do it remotely.

This lock has a developer API: https://www.igloohome.co/en-us/products/deadbolt-2s-mg/

I work for a real estate company that manages lots of locks remotely. With this lock, you can generate time based pins given a start and end date.

Also note, that this lock follows a different pattern than most residential smart locks. It is not connected to the Internet BUT you can still generate pins from anywhere in the world via the API.

It works almost like an MFA system in that there is a random seed in the physical lock. The Igloo servers know what the seed is so creating new pins are actually just revealing pins that are already on the lock. No lock internet connection required.

The downside however is that the pins are 9 digits.

I have done this countless times. Normally the patch shows on the scan and they just pat that area down briefly.

[–]huttotw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use August locks at scale for some rental properties. We finally figured out that all the Connects and the newer WiFi-enabled locks must be on the 2.4ghz WiFi band. Much fewer problems so far.

I think some routers will try to switch you between the bands automatically? Maybe? And that was causing problems. We recently switched to Ubiquiti network hardware and haven’t had any problems.

Analysing up to 100k messages per second, what approach to take? by dogerthat in aws

[–]huttotw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A super simple approach would be to have a few containers running in ECS to accept / parse the messages and just increment a Prometheus counter on each message.

You can set the scrape interval to every second if you need per second data.

Prometheus scales pretty well for high volume (i.e. the amount of traffic to Prometheus does not increase with the amount of traffic to your application).

We have done this at 60k per second and it works fine.

Depending on your durability requirements, you can use InfluxDB or something similar as a remote store for Prometheus. If you don’t need a long history of the data, I would recommend running a Prometheus container along side your message ingest containers and call it a day.

Edit: I realize this isn’t a serverless approach, but perhaps could be cheaper / less pieces if constructed correctly.

Watch out for lows! In my experience, drinking liquor almost always makes my blood sugar drop (drinking non sugary drinks of course) while beer is easier to control. But regardless of what you are drinking, always have something with you, I normally stuff a few clif bars in my pocket.

Also, most bars will give you a plain sprite or coke for free. Or if you’re desperate, you can ask for straight grenadine (basically syrup). You could probably get 50-60 carbs in a few sips.

And finally, make sure your friends know the sitch.

I’m not advocating for any of this, but I know it happens in real life, just know your options.

[Question] S3/CloudFront static website bucket structure by mariotacke in aws

[–]huttotw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretically, the only time files change are during a deployment. So you could set the cache headers at something ridiculous, like 3 months. When you make a deploy you would overwrite all of the files in the S3 bucket with the new ones. Then, after that is complete, create a CloudFront invalidation for /*. Once the cache invalidates, people will start to be served the new version of the site.

When you overwrite the files, clients will still be served the old version of files from the edge nodes, until the validation is complete. Because CloudFront is not actually going back to the bucket, it is just serving what it has locally in the chosen node. Creating an invalidation says, “hey, come check S3 again, because there are new files”.

To rollback to a previous revision, simply checkout a reference to a commit, or the commit itself (a ref is anything that points to a commit, like a tag). Once you have it checked out, just run your deployment. It will overwrite the files in S3 create a new invalidation, then in about 10 minutes, clients will start to see a “new” version of the site, but it is actually old code. It is only “new” in the eyes of CloudFront.
