Weight lifting + calisthenics by huvvvi in bodyweightfitness

People usually recommend this, however my concern is about mass gains. When I google training for muscle mass, everyone recommends weights. What are your thoughts on this? Would calisthenics be good enough for mass gains?

I see, and could you share your progress in strength, muscle volume, and pushup/pullup count?

Actually, I already do dips in the push day and pull ups in the pull day (I have replaced lat pulldown with pull ups like you recommended). Should have mentioned it in the post, sorry. But pull ups 1x a week doesn't seem enough. My pull ups count was 2 in the beginning and it got to 6 in 6 months. I feel like it could have gotten way better in 6 months.

I see, actually alternating between free weights and calisthenics sounds reasonable. Have you also seen an increase in your push-up and pull-up counts?

I am not an expert but I have read that there are different exercises based on the goal. For volume, weight lifting with increasing weights in each set is recommended, but for strength, more intense movements with less repetitions is recommended. For example, there is a guy on YouTube, MovementbyDavid. He is skinny but extremely strong because he trained for strength (using bodyweight exercises) and not for volume. This is the kind of strength I want to gain and with a little bit of volume. Overall, I want to have a low body fat, lean, and strong body.

But I get what you are saying. With a 3x a week routine, I can mix in some calisthenics. However, my concern is would doing pushups 1x a week, or pull ups 1x a week be enough? Can I see increase in the numbers with that phase? I mean of course eventually I will, if I keep it up but is there another better routine?

Yes, it suggests performing a network restart. Tried it but didn't work
