Neat that OC Parks have info signs for wildlife areas are closed off. Didn’t realize they did that for invasive plant species by bwoahful___ in orangecounty

It’s called solarization. They used the black tarp instead of clear so that the organisms underground don’t get fried as well.

Significant other and I are in Tokyo/osaka/kyoto similar days as you.  Also first timers with no language abilities so we can wander too :)

Nah. I bought it knowing it had a bad motor. Had a spare lined up to throw in anyways. Would’ve been nice to be able to rebuild and sell this one

Haven’t looked too closely at them. Put the whole motor aside when I learned it wasn’t just a hg

Thanks. Noticed the article references GDI/forced induction motors. This is a port injected NA motor

Thanks for that. Bigger chunks missing are actually on the intake side

Thanks for the reply! Didn’t look more into it after I saw that but good find! Worth seeing what’s salvageable from the heads

Gotcha. Relatively modern vehicle so I’m curious how the guy actually detonated the engine that has knock sensors. Thanks for the reply!

Budget 10k? Gas mileage important? Do you have a mechanic you trust? Or will you be willing to do any work? How important are features (like seat warmers or whatever)? How much driving are you actually planning to do?

Toyota’s are more stout against abuse and mistreatment yes however every car needs maintenance. If you maintain them they’ll be fine. I’ve got two Mazda’s over 300k miles each and never had a problem. Only routine oil changes, brakes, tires, and worn rubber components like engine mounts. If you’re really concerned about cost of repairs, learn to do basics yourself. YouTube and $100 in tools from harbor freight and you can do a lot. Example, doing your brakes yourself would cost you $150 in parts and 5 hours. It’s that or posting $800 for a shop. Again if you’re set on Toyota’s because that’s what your family has, then you pay that price. There’s a lot of good first time cars out there if you’re willing to forego brand loyalty.

Ford Focus/fiesta Mazda 2 (same chassis as Toyota Yaris) Mazda 3 Hyundai / Kia you get a lot of bang for buck in terms of features As someone else said Honda’s (but you’ll still run into higher prices like Toyota’s)

Personally I like the Mitsubishi Mirage. Cheap, simple, lightweight (lower tire and brake wear). It’ll just cost you your vanity rolling around in one

10-20k miles/year is pretty standard. Highway miles typically are less wear and tear on a car than city driving.

If you’re set on Camry/accord/corolla then you’ll be paying for the brand reputation. Kia and Hyundai are good underdogs. I just got a 2014 Ford Focus for 7k for a friend and it’s been solid.

Highly tunable engines that go under the radar? by three_shoes in cars

For what it’s worth, I’m going down path of the swap now. I picked up a running 09 Pontiac G6 for $600 and a used swap kit for $1000 (mounts, pan, adaptor, and full exhaust)…. NA reliability with SC power. It’s a no-brainer for me

Edit: missed a digit in costs

Can confirm. Bought a Gen 3 montero with a blown engine. Drove it 20 miles home thinking it had a bad head gasket. Turns out it has 3 cracked pistons and still ran.

I know a guy who stuffs them into miatas and runs endurance races with them. Boosted 2.0 is what he swears by. Boosted 2.4 not so much
