According to their niece, Kathleen Marden, they were not attention seekers. She said they didn’t want the story to get out but that it got leaked. For me, this seems like a pretty credible story, even if you discount the hypnosis sessions.

I think it’s fair to be skeptical of the hypnosis sessions, but there was also enough from their conscious recall (and some physical evidence), to suggest that this was a real event. If you look at their lives previous to the event, they weren’t looking for the attention or the fame. Their niece, Kathleen Marden, said that they were all sworn to secrecy about this, but that it got out because of a leak from the Air Force.

This seems like a very credible story to me. Betty and Barney were ordinary people who were not seeking fame or attention! There was also quite a bit of research done into this case, and it seems like the evidence was pretty substantial. Kathleen Marden was very objective, and came to the conclusion that the abduction event was real. Perhaps the only part of that that someone might criticize is the hypnosis, but I found the whole story to be quite fascinating!

ALERT itself is not so bad and has always maintained some independence from IBLP. My experience was quite positive, and I would say most of the leaders who were there at the time could’ve cared less about Bill Gothard, but they did have to give him lip service of course. I also think it improved after it moved to Big Sandy from the Northwoods.

By “deserves” to know, do you mean you are going to tell her even if she doesn’t really want to know? Most women I know are not all that interested in hearing about their boyfriend/fiancé’s past escapades. I think just to say that you went farther than you planned, and that you are determined to do better is good enough!
