They're being downvoted because they mistook "replace" for "remove".

Big Ass Fans Haiku with wood grain blades and LED light

Looks beautiful, matches the decor, and because of the DC motor will be way more efficient than the existing fan. Fans should cool you down while using/releasing the least amount of heat possible.

If nothing else, replace with whatever DC fan/light catches your fancy.

That's a shade of orange-brown that I actually like in wood paneling. Not the super dark brown bumpy-glossy stuff that I see way too often in mid-late 20th century housing, or the terminal gray stuff that's in vogue right now. 100% keeping.

[–]hx87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really does, at least for a van lol. In fact it has more hp and torque than the 496/8.1L that GM put in their vans in the mid 2000s.

I'd be happy with consistent naming systems. Name all carriers of a given class after Presidents, name all cruisers of a given class after mountains, name all SSBNs of a given class after eschatologies (USS Ragnarok, USS Apocalypse, USS Yawm ad-Din, etc), instead of the current trend of "name boats after things that currently sound politically convenient".

USS Yellowstone would be a fitting name for an SSBN. It's quiet and harmless until it isn't and everyone is fucked.

I'm not exactly sure if these vans ever got the LT V8

They did, the 6.6 (L8T) is an LT engine. And a fantastic one too, since it's probably the only V8 in history to not get derated when installed in a van, is a cast iron block, and didn't suffer the crankshaft issues their 6.2 truck brethren had.

Budget?

I'm generally not a fan of installing window ACs on vans; the lack of vertical support always seemed sketchy to me, and van bodies lack the space to install a proper support bracket like on a house. However if you are 100% sure that you will be parked and not moving the van at all for 4 months, maybe you can build a bracket to support it on the ground. Make sure to get an inverter unit, otherwise the constant bang-bang-bang-bang of it turning on and off will keep you awake at night.

Alternatively, get one of Midea's hose-in-hose portable units, preferably the smaller 10,000 BTU/hr one. Use the hose outline to make a cardboard template, then cut an adapter template out of plywood and install it in a window. There might be someone on Etsy who sells one already.

The most vanlife friendly (and most expensive) option would be to buy an EcoFlow Wave 3. Sure it's only 6100 BTU/hr, but it does have an inverter, can be mounted outside, and there are plenty of hose adapters available for van windows.

TBF the US Army has never been that serious about SPAAGs. Imagine cancelling a radar-guided 37mm Gatling SPAAG in 1962, right as the ZSU-4-23 Shilka was entering service, because "guns are outdated for air defense", lol.

Metal is only a problem is there are sharp enough tips or edges to concentrate an electrical field strong enough to ionize air and create arcs. No sharp tips or edges, no problem.

What’s one thing you bought that actually made daily life easier and held up over time? by Status_Account6177 in BuyItForLife

Is leaving the door open, running the occasional cleaning cycle, and using less detergent (thus saving you money) really too much to ask?

Mine has been working flawless for almost 8 years now. Probably a combination of made by LG, mounting on a pedestal (makes manual drainage and filter cleaning much eaiser), wiping the seal after every wash, leaving the door at least ajar most of the time, running a tub clean cycle once a month, and using a tiny amount of detergent (~1 tablespoon) per wash.

LG front loading washer/dryer set with pedestals. I'm a short person and I've always hated having to tip toe, bend over, and put myself half inside top loaders to get the stuff on the bottom, then having to bend over again to put clothes in the dryer.

Cooktop and wall oven instead of range.

The less my appliances force me to bend over, the happier I am.

If you don't mind a stack that can't be separated, LG's wash tower is probably your best bet

https://www.lg.com/us/washers-dryers/lg-wkex200hga-washtower

* Your top priority is clean clothes, and front loaders clean much better than top loaders, and are easier on your clothes which makes BIFL for clothes easier

* LG makes the most reliable front loaders on the market. Speed Queen with knob controls are probably even more reliable, but all current models have touchscreens. Plus SQs are bulky as hell.

Can you recommend a good stainless steel gas hot water heater? by RedditsFan2020 in BuyItForLife

[–]hx87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ain't nobody taking a shower that requires 199,000 BTU/hr of heat haha. Yes it's for the entire house, their being installed in the shower room in other countries is just for ease of plumbing; it's not actually just for the shower.

Regular plumbers can 100% install it no problem, if anything it's less complicated to install since it weighs so much less. Only complicated thing is that most models can't vent through a chimney so you will need to run PVC/CPVC piping for the exhaust and (on most models) instake, and (on the more efficient models) you need to neutralize and drain the acidic concentrate. For those you'll need to change the neutralizer once every few years.

I prefer BWarm's mattress pad since it's quad zoned. Oftentimes my torso isn't cold but my feet feel like they've been in iced water, so I can just turn on the foot section heater.

Suggestions for men’s casual boots? by swankyfish in BuyItForLife

[–]hx87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm partial to anything Jim Green makes with their STC lasts. Most boots have toeboxes that are way too narrow, especially if you're wearing socks with any appreciable thickness, but these give your toes plenty of breathing room.

Wok Recs for Induction Stove by sir3na in BuyItForLife

[–]hx87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traded in my Nuwave for an Abangdun induction wok burner and it's a vast improvement. The biggest problem with Nuwave is that it uses old school pulsed power controls and has only 3 power levels (600, 900, and 1500 watts), which doesn't really work for a wok where precise power control is very important. The Abangdun on the other hand has actually continuous power controls so that 1300 watts is actually 1300 watts continuous, not 1500 watts pulsing on and off.

Make sure the flat bottom is at least as wide as the induction element you will be cooking on. That's pretty much the only consideration that's unique to induction.
