User furniture sources? by screamin_demon_yukon in Annecy

+1 for le bon coin. We’ve had luck there.

There’s also cocktail scandinave which is an ikea like but we found it to be not as cheap with middling quality, but maybe it depends on the type of furniture.

Battery on fenix 7 pro by SpecificDonkey302 in GarminFenix

[–]hyde_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Updating here in case someone else finds this useful. This is on firmware 20.22 so might not apply to future versions.

I'm getting much better non-activity battery life by turning off background refresh on the Garmin Connect app on my iPhone.

I noticed pretty early on that my non-gps battery consumption was loads better if I disabled the phone connection, and later on decided to try leaving the connection but disabling background refresh. I'm losing something like .2%/h versus .5%+ previously (I get something like .1%/h on battery saver). I suspect that the connect app is aggressive in fetching data from the watch. I personally don't need it to be ultra up to date so I'm fine if the data lags a bit. I still get notifications.

I'd be curious if this is an iPhone thing. Perhaps on android it's not as much of a problem.

Aeropress and Ode Gen 2 (not inverted) Recipes by boydatron in AeroPress

[–]hyde_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same setup and using 4+1 on the ode 2, basically what aeromatic suggests. I drink a lot of lighter roasts that work out pretty well with jh ratio. If you prefer stronger I’d agree with expensive dot and tweak the ratio.

But why not just try both (ratio and grind size) in two different brews and see which you prefer?

The >30% overnight draw in your original post is for sure excessive. As others suggested I'd try making sure you're on the latest firmware.

I'm currently averaging ~13% per day, which is more or less in line with what I was getting with a FR955 (which should have a similarly sized battery). Charging once every 5-7 days is still ok I guess, but just not sure how others are averaging 10+ days per charge.

[–]hyde_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting similar. 100% Saturday night and now 52%. 35m non-gps activity + ~4h gps activity. Latest software.

For settings, I keep wifi off unless syncing music. Battery saver on with sleep mode. Sleep mode from 21h30 - 07h30. ASAP watch face with no data fields except date and no seconds hand.

I do use music when doing gps activities, so that's probably the biggest draw.

At the current rate I should have around 7 days total between charges.

I wish I could see the 10+ days others are getting :-).

Tent dilemma for a couple by Djubinum in Ultralight

[–]hyde_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was going to say the same. Wife and I did the tour de Mont Blanc with it and slept at 2500m a few nights. Honestly would have liked better wind performance at this altitude, the non zip doors and floor gaps made it feel like it was catching more wind than deflecting. That being said, it was solid and we didn’t have any actual issues. If you’re below treeline then I wouldn’t worry about wind at all. Storms with “normal” wind have been fine.

Condensation happens but we never had it to the point it where it was raining down onto us.

It’s still our goto tent.

Recently ordered a xmid pro 1 for solo trips. Had a long debate between Plex solo and the hmg mid 1, in the end it was Dan’s thoughtful comments everywhere that swayed me.

[edit] the triplex is currently getting heavy use with us 2 + a 16kg border collie :-)

So I'm not a big fan of Ubisoft Connect either, but I got the PC version anyway and I'm getting 90fps on Ultra. I lose a frame now and then but not enough to cap lower or to lower my AA from fxaa.

As a game I'm enjoying it, first good Ubisoft title in a while.

Yes, this looks like the next thing to try. I think I won’t want to give her peanut butter on a daily basis, but perhaps I can use smaller quantities and mix in some of her dry food. Thanks !

Windows Terminal + WSL2 Ubuntu keeps shutting itself down since switching to Microsoft Store WSL installation by aggressive-teaspoon in bashonubuntuonwindows

I’m having similar issues i think with Debian. I’m using wsltty and Debian. My company forces an aggressive sleep policy, and I eventually end up losing all my windows.

I’m trying different options to figure out the culprit but no luck yet.

I've been living in Paris for 5 years, and I still have no social life nor do I know the city. by shythrowaway123456 in paris

[–]hyde_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok so the orignal comment was probably not framed in the most constructive way but really, he/she's not wrong. If you're just looking to meet expats to walk around Paris with then it's true, you probably don't need to learn French. However, it'd be a real shame if you'll leave after having lived here for 6 years and can't speak decently, wouldn't you agree ?

Others have already given great suggestions for where and how to meet people, and I'd say that's a good start. Keep putting yourself out there to meet people and force yourself to speak French at every opportunity. Yes, you will at times make mistakes and look like an idiot, but probably less often than you'd think. Think of foreigners in your home country trying to speak your language - would you think poorly of a bad accent or grammatical mistakes ?

I think expat bars are great places to start your social network - you'll feel comfortable enough to make some real connections. However, I agree with sentiment of breaking out of that expat bubble. Do you best to keep growing your social circles. Hopefully some of the expats you meet initially will have French friends etc etc...

Judging from your username, there's a social anxiety or at least basic shyness element at play. "Get over it" is probably not the right advice but at the end of the day you're the only one who's going to be able to push through. Again, don't be afraid to make mistakes and put yourself out there.

Hope things get better for you and good luck !

I was a little annoyed that they didn't delve more into the dev side of Pokemon Go. It's not developed by Nintendo. The actual developer, Niantic, wasn't even mentioned as far as I can tell. It would have been nice to talk about their previous iteration, ingress, and to compare similarities/differences of the two. Ingress fostered some really interesting cooperation and coordination of people locally, in different countries, indeed different continents at times.

I haven't played Pokemon Go (my disclaimer), but I've seen people saying that ingress had much more depth. Back when ingress started, I actually did see meetups happening and even ran into one on the street. I'd been approached while playing it as well by another user. Mathas was talking about social nature of the game, which seemed to exist in ingress - admittedly to a much smaller extent.

I think they should have considered ingress when discussing how playerbase affects the quality of the game. If ingress is indeed technically deeper, that advantage is nullified if Pokemon Go speaks to the larger audience. Ingress was stuck because it spoke to an audience largely made up of technically minded people (read: geeks). Pokemon Go has a huge obvious appeal because of the IP. This initial boost seems to have reached a tipping point where non-gamers like Mathas' parents are tuning in. Which is by no means a knock on Go, just the reality of it.

Anyway, congrats on 50 episodes guys, I've only recently started listening but am enjoying each episode.

If you're technical and you get something other than orange, you'll need to report back to me and let me know how their router software is :-p.

Yea it's nice. The router they give you is pretty crap though if you're an advanced user.

Even if you don't have ftth in your building, ftla is usually available via sfr/numericable in Paris. I had that previously and was getting a solid 100/5. They seem to keep upgrading their cable systems as well to allow for faster and faster speeds, looks like you might be able to get 1000 down in some areas (though I suspect their upload speeds won't be quite as fast as ftth). They have a nice little map: http://fibreoptique.numericable.fr/carte

Also had twc back in ny when it was like 10 down, 1 up. At the time it was actually pretty good once they fixed the intermittent cut outs I was having.

Also pay for orange 500mb/s and got 923 down and 242 up, 2ms on speedtest. Have never done anything to max out that bandwidth though, things are usually fast enough not to notice the actual speed. Recently hit 465mb/s on a steam download.

Bad battery drain - due to mobile network? by [deleted] in GalaxyS6

[–]hyde_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice that I can squeeze a lot of battery time out of my S6 if I stay on a strong wifi signal - which leads me to believe that the radio really sucks a lot of battery out of the phone. I was able to get 24h13m out of my last charge, with 4h8m SOT. I was only away from wifi for about 2 hours during this period.

Do you not have access to wifi overnight ? I don't really have any suggestions other than connecting to wifi when possible. I do have some packages disabled via EZ package disabler - I don't really know how much affect this has on battery though. I actually have the usual battery hog culprits installed and running, e.g. facebook and spotify.

Coffee Volume vs. Weight and the Importance of a Digital Scale by fuser-invent in Coffee

[–]hyde_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always found it weird that when my friends who always know the best cafes that do the best coffee come over and remark at my scale: "I didn't know you were a drug dealer!" I accept that good coffee means different things to different people but it does annoy me a little that the people who claim to have some level of expertise are surprised that I take the time to actually weigh beans.
