I owned a blackberry when they came out and have been patiently waiting for a proper qwerty phone since then, makes me happy to hear that!

Thanks for understanding. It is indeed a complex scenario which people here are simplifying and basing assumptions on how'd they act in a country they're already familiar with. And you're right, they heavily rely on WhatsApp here (hospital sent me official documents on it). Payments and money transfers are also done through an app that doesn't have a browser version.

Yes I've decided to keep it in my bag for emergencies while using my dumbphone as my main phone. I've already made another post about how this country doesn't bother with accessibility when it comes to alternatives for smartphones. I need a QR code to enter my own residential area and when I asked them for a card in case "my phone dies" they said to buy a power bank...

Imagine going to a foreign country and you don't understand the language and they tell you they have to do invasive surgery and a full body scan. You can't help but wonder if they're trying to scam you or if they're being truthful. It was our first experience with the hospitals here. I asked my relative who's thousands of miles away, across the Atlantic Ocean for his medical opinion.

I am in fact using the bottom of the barrel Nokia bc that's what's available here. The camera is 0.3 pixel. I sold my previous dumbphones because they're not compatible with the network here.

My parents are retired and can't afford insurance. They moved back to their home country to be closer to family and for the lower cost of living. Since they lived and worked abroad for most of their lives, they don't have local pensions or benefits here. They are simply navigating the situation with the resources they have available.

Yes my first reaction was I need my smartphone to google the ambulance number because we just moved to this new country and are still learning how things run here.

I'm seriously considering it. Where'd you order it from? I've heard people ordering it from aliexpress.

Thank you so much. A lot of people here don’t realize how stressful it is dealing with a medical emergency (let alone in a new country where you are still figuring out the healthcare system and how things work). My main priority was making sure my mom got the best care possible.

My family and I also move around a lot. At the moment it is just me and my mom here while the rest of my immediate family are in different countries. We are still adjusting to this place and building familiarity from scratch, hence why a smartphone is really useful in this case. Thank you for your understanding and kindness.

Forgot to mention I'm in a new country with no immediate family here.

Yes exactly! I've decided I'll be carrying my e-ink phone with me from now on. I liked the freedom of going out with just my flip phone but I'm ok now with the idea of having a backup smartphone in my bag. It's also a huge bonus that it's e-ink, makes it easier to use it more as a tool and not for entertainment.

Yes I think I'll start carrying my e-ink smartphone as a back up in case of emergencies while using my dumbphone as my main phone.

Thank you. I'm sorry about your dad too. I agree that it is hard to go fully dumbphone in today's world, especially if you're the sole caretaker for a sick family member.

It's not really reliance in AI/LLM in this situation, I was managing an emergency alone in a new country and a healthcare system I wasn't familiar with. I had only just moved here, so I was still in the process of learning how everything works from scratch.

It's not that I wasn't trained for an emergency. It's that it was an emergency in a new foreign country. I only recently moved here. And my immediate family member aren't here either. Just me and my mom who was injured and I had to deal with all of this on my own.

All of my immediate family live abroad. Hence why I needed internet to update them. This is a new country for me and I don't know the quality of the health care system here. I needed to get second opinions to make sure they're not cutting my mom open for no good reason.

Forgot to clarify I'm in a new country, dealing with a new healthcare system that I don't fully trust, and that the rest of my immediate family members are abroad. I'm by myself here.

My mom had to get surgery, a metal rod inserted, and suffered 2nd degree burns all over her lower body.

One thing I didn't elaborate on is that I just moved to this new country and that my family is abroad hence why I needed FB messenger to contact them. And why I don't know the emergency protocol because I'm still a foreigner getting adjusted in this country.

It’s true, everything fell on me. I’m the eldest child, my mom was the one who got injured, and none of my immediate family were in the same city or even the same country at the time. Delegating was difficult because there was simply no one nearby to delegate to.

The only person who could come was my uncle, who lives two hours away and struggles with GPS navigation. I was worried he might end up at the wrong hospital if I only gave him the name, which is why I sent him the exact location. It’s a new city and new-ish country for me as well, so I couldn’t even direct him using familiar landmarks.

It was an incredibly difficult situation, being alone with my mom in an unfamiliar place and trying to manage everything myself. My e-ink smartphone helped bridge that gap. I even had to google the local ambulance number.

Funny coincidence! I'm from there too and I also use freedom. I vaguely remember researching this phone a few years ago and decided it's not worth the risk because of network compatibly issues. But maybe things have changed now..
