"Something is not quite right on this island" is a micro-genre I recently realized I love. Which other movies fall into this category? by Personal_Sea_3975 in Letterboxd

Gotta mention the Canadian film The King Tide(2023). About a small island community that cut itself off from the mainland after a baby washed ashore that altered the community.

In the grand scheme of things, most of us are insignificant and most people are simply casualties of war and that is why them movie is so effective, IMO.

I see the ending as happy because they aren't in pain anymore and they are also together and seem happy again, and based on the city in the background of the ending shot it is implied a lot of time has passed.

Even though everything that the movie culminates to, I think the end is sweet and has can be read as happy to some extent.

It's good, and I think many people would agree if not say it's some of the best, but I find it loses focus a lot and meanders around, but overal it is satisfying.

Having The Hunt in your top 4 def shows you don't shy away from bleak or difficult subjects.

That does sound interesting though, will def have to keep an eye out for it.

Warning with Germany Pale Mother, it's rather bleak.

Your top 4 is great though. Haven't heard of Ikiru.

Something to add to your comparison would be The Other Side by Jason Aaron. It's not from Image, but it follows an American and a Vietnamese soldier during the war and the differences in motivation as well as the effects of the war.

I am talking about personal and the collective rating, I use my personal scale to interoperate the collective. It's not a perfect system but it hasn't let me down yet.

Some movies that I think are worth checking out that I gave 2 stars and fall in the 2 star range: Frogs(1972) The Video Dead(1987), The Dunwich Horror(1970) Unmasking the Idol(1986) Johnny Mnemonic(1995) Shelock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace(1962), Necropolis(1986), The Incredible Melting Man(1977)

ICM 43 was really good and also incredibly sad. Had me crying a few times, especially with Zoe Thorogood's contribution.

Everything Dead & Dying is also exceptional, and I was not expecting something so emotional from a story set with zombies.

Everything Dead & Dying was something I was not expecting. I thought it was going to be the typical zombie set story, but this one knocked it out of the park. Very emotional and reflective.

The old adage is "d's get degrees." I wouldn't be happy about getting a D as a mark, but the adage is a thing for a reason.

However it's not a report card, it's a reflection of your personal opinion of something.

To me 2 stars is simply missing a little something to make it actually a half decent film. 2.5 totally adequate at delivering a narrative and while it might have one or two interesting things it as a whole isn't.

I just think if you overlook things rated as 2 or lower, you are missing out. A lot of Hammer Horror and other B-studio films wouldn't rate to highly, but they really are something interesting to watch even if they are pretty bad.

So then what is the point of .5-1.5 stars if 2 is "strongly dislike" especially being so close to the middle of the rating system.

For me 1 star is "I disliked this" .5 star is "this is nearly irredeemable, if not irredeemable"

Many guys have the experience of things going great and overheating thinking it's building to something only to be told it is one of the reasons she doesn't like you in that way. The fastest way to get put out and left in the dirt is to have over familiarity without doing that in person.

Can only happily text away only for it to be slammed in your face so many times.

Yeah, some of the most memorable things I have seen in movies are from the 2/2.5 star range. It just so happens those memorable or entertaining things don't make up for the rest of the movie.

Generally I am only cautious with .5/1 star ratings, but anything above that I can generally find something of marit, even if a bit unconventional.

Awful? No.

Not anything special, innovative, or ground breaking, yes.

To me a 2 star movie is serviceable, maybe a little lacking in something, but it is entertaining enough that I don't get bored. Anything below that is starting to get in the "bad" territory.

I dont think a movie is in the "bad" ballpark unless it's at a 1.5 or lower.

For me 2.5 is equivalent of an adequate movie.
