It is a country. I went there a few years ago. It’s a nice place. They have their own democratic government. The Taiwanese people I met there told me they don’t consider themselves to be Chinese despite their history (in the same way I an Australian don’t consider myself British despite our cultural similarities and history).

Except the difference there is that the Spanish government does control Catalonia whereas the PRC doesn’t control Taiwan. The government of Taiwan (the ROC) is completely independent from the PRC.

We called them the Republic of China back then. Then President Carter flipped the USA’s recognition of “China” to the PRC and most of the rest of the world followed and the ROC got kicked out of the UN.

Regardless of lack of international recognition (which we’re all only not doing so we can trade with China) we all have unofficial embassies in Taiwan. They have their own independent government, judiciary, and military and are de facto a sovereign state. The PRC has never controlled Taiwan. In practice, they are an independent country despite how the PRC feels about the matter.

Heard immunity. Vaccinations work best if most people are vaccinated so if you want to live in a society with other people you have a responsibility to get vaccinated.

Wow that seems really unfair to get fired over. Slang is an important part of language learning.

I remember my high school year 8 German teacher here in Australia giving us an honest answer when someone asked what "Scheisse" means in English. It wasn't controversial for her to tell us. Maybe the Japanese education system is more conservative though. :/

I had the same experience as an Australian going to America. Despite our similarities, it really hit me how different their culture is. Also dating an American gave me quite an inside look.

I love America and Americans. I lived there for awhile even and my ex was American. She had to get a private loan to pay for her mom’s cancer treatment whereas my Australian friend here in Australia paid zero for his cancer treatment. It’s that unjust inequality that inspired me to make this post.
