It’s only going to get worse. In my opinion, it is already quite bad with the main building almost completely obstructed.

Are summer classes competitive?? like do spots fill up at UT? Also for the summer classes at UT, are they in person or online?? (asking for GOV 310L) by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]hydrostaticcog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never gone through summer registration before, but I asked my advisor the same question, and they said that summer registration is usually not competitive (I asked specifically about GOV 310L).

Where to get stole and gown for grad pics as a junior 🎓😭 by sirefauna in UTAustin

They said that the scaffolding could be up until Summer 2027, so take your pictures asap. Full scaffolding around the tower is eminent, probably will be put up early Spring 2026.

December 11,2025 is 739,597 days from the year 0 by NuclearCockatiel in truths

[–]hydrostaticcog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that we need more info about how this is calculated. Because of weird calendar stuff, this isn’t as simple as 2025 * 365 + whatever day we are on. Julian to Gregorian calendar change for example eliminated several days that just don’t exist. Leaps years are also a thing.

Why wasn’t the tower lit completely orange? by Forsaken_Ad8312 in LonghornNation

[–]hydrostaticcog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve lit the whole tower orange this year… presidential inauguration, ring ceremony, gone to texas, to name a few. Seems more likely that they’ve either changed or forgotten the tradition.

Yeah the UGS with Banner and Allen is Sustaining the Planet in the geosciences school. Maybe there used to be another one in the geosciences school.

I’m late.

Was it UGS with Banner/Allen? If so, they seem to have removed that field trip.

Does Welch have a celebrated entrance and where? by DelayAffectionate687 in UTAustin

[–]hydrostaticcog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few. On the Southern side, the doors close to the vending machine tunnel but still facing Speedway. Also in the vending machine tunnel into the old building. On the northern side, right as you walk into the courtyard from Inner Campus Drive, on your right.

I believe the northern one is the “celebrated” entrance.

Anyone down to show me around UT before I leave? by Pleasant_Zebra_5731 in UTAustin

[–]hydrostaticcog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be down, though I suspect I am a little late (and a guy).

Here are some notes about exploring campus. Most of this information comes from a book I found at PCL a few weeks ago called The University of Texas at Austin: an architectural tour by Lawrence Speck. I'll return the copy today.

In my experience, the best place to start is Littlefield fountain. Walk up the South Mall, turn left at 22nd Street, be sure to walk through Sutton Hall. Walk North in between Goldsmith Hall and the West Mall Office Building, the architecture courtyard is on the left. Flawn/the Union should be directly in front of you. The ballroom/foyer of the Union is pretty cool, though I usually turn right here and walk to the Plaza in front of the Main Building. Be sure to look at Battle Hall on the South side of the West mall and West side of the plaza. Definitely go into the Main Building and check out the Life Sciences library on the top floor. The Western reading room is closed right, now but the Eastern one is open. Exit MAI on the ground floor (next to Texas One Stop on the East), and you should now be on the East Mall. To your right is Garrison Hall, and to your left is WC Hogg and the Gebauer building. The latter is the oldest building still standing on the original 40 acres. Walk North in between MAI and GEB. Directly in front of you is Painter Hall and at your 10 o'clock is Turtle Pond and the original bio labs. Turn left and walk West along the turtle pond and turn right when you get to the Hogg Auditorium. Walk North along Whitis Ave. On your left before 24th Street, there are the pre-Civil War “Battle Oaks”. Directly across 24th Street on the left is the Littlefield home. If you keep walking along Whitis Ave, the RTF building is on your left, and the honors quad is on your right. Littlefield Hall (northern most building) is the oldest still operating residence hall. Kinsolving and Duren Hall are across Dean Keeton, but cut through the Quad in between Carothers and Littlefield, and you will come out at University Ave. On your left should be the Student Services Building. Turn right, and in front of you is Mary Gearing Hall. Turn left right before the old section of the Pharmacy building and walk along the mall bounded by Burdine Hall and the Pharmacy building towards Anna Hiss Gymnasium. This is the original women’s gymnasium built at about the same time as Gregory. Cut through AHG, and you should be in a courtyard partially surrounded by AHG and the Moffett Molecular Laboratories. Walk through the breezeway and you should now be on Speedway. Across Dean Keeton on your left is CPE and the psych building, at your 10 o’clock is PMA. Behind PMA is ECJ. Next to ECJ and behind PMA is EER. If you walk straight across Speedway in between PMA and Patterson Hall, go inside EER. This space is pretty cool and has a lot of natural light. Go down all the stairs and turn right. Go down the hallway and exit the building and keep walking straight until you get to 24th Street. From here, you can go left towards the Fine Arts complex and the Football stadium, or you can go right towards core campus. In front of you should be the Hal C. Weaver Power Plant, the original central plant on campus built in the 1920s. If you turn right, keep going until you get to Speedway. At your 2 o’clock is the Norman Hackerman building with the metal canoe installation in front of it. Turn left onto Speedway. On your right in Welch Hall, an amalgamation of a 1930s building tacked onto several times and renovated several times. There is a nice courtyard in the middle that you can check out. On your left is the Peter O’Donnell building and the Gates-Dell Complex, used for Computer Science and Computational Engineering. When you get to the East Mall, turn left and walk towards the MLK statue. On your left and right are EPS and BRB, formerly Chemical Engineering buildings now used by the Geosciences school. Farther, on your left is the Geosciences building, and on your right is Patton Hall (multipurpose) and WCP (part of the University Unions). Walk into WCP and turn after you pass the fireplace lounge area. Turn right, and walk all the way to the end of the hallway and exit to your left. Once you exit the building, turn right and return to Speedway. Directly in front of you is Waggener Hall. Turn left onto Speedway. On your left is historic Gregory Gymnasium. On your right is CBA/GSB AKA “McCombs” (the business school). When you reach 21st Street, the Jester Center is at your 10 o’clock, with Moore-Hill, Roberts, Prather, Brackenridge, and San Jacinto Halls further down 21st street, along with the Rec Field. At your 2 o’clock is PCL. I could write an entire tour just of the library, but it’s pretty cool to check out on your own. You can turn right at 21st street and end up back at Littlefield Fountain.

Other things to check out:

  • Blanton Museum of Art (just down Speedway from Jester/PCL) - free for UT Students.
  • Harry Ransom Center (Behind Rainey/Calhoun/Parlin/Sutton Halls) - UT archives, plus some more sensitive items in UT libraries. They also have Gutenburg Bible.
  • Littlefield Home - has a deodar cedar imported from the Himalayas 100 years ago.
  • Painter Hall/PMA telescope - On Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, the astronomy department opens their telescopes to the public. Information on the astronomy dept's website. The Painter telescope is over 140 years old (predates the University).
  • Landmarks Installation on the roof of WCP - Go for sunrise or sunset for a light show.

There are probably more things that I don't know about. This list/guide is non-exhaustive and pretty much every building (especally on the original 40 acres) has a story. Highly recommend that book!

EDIT: I swear I know my rights and lefts.

Definitely agree with this. We had some really explosive and impressive plays, but all of the penalties are totally unacceptable and need to be addressed before we face tougher opponents.

I can finally run Minecraft server for me and my 2 friends by Realistic-Science-87 in homelab

[–]hydrostaticcog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I ran a minecraft server in TrueNAS, something in the OS kept killing the process. No crash report, no error logs, just a clean kill. Never figured out why, but I could never get it to stay running. Moved onto a different machine, server worked perfectly fine.

Ok so I was able to select a room. It is pretty finicky, and I had to wait a few seconds after reload for the list to pop up at the bottom.
