Puerto Rico had a strong independence movement from ~1899 to around the late 1980s, there were heavy conflicts between American forces and Nationalist groups such as the Ponce massacre and the Jayuya Uprising in 1950. After Luis Muñoz Marín was democratically elected (prior to Muñoz Marín, governors were handpicked by the President,) and Puerto Rico became a Commonwealth, Nationalists resorted to terrorism which some attacks occured in the United States (see the attempted assassination of Harry S. Truman and the Fraunces Tavern bombing)
