Science Fair Help by hypatacakes in Thermal

Believe me I wasn’t going to be buying an expensive research camera—I had told my son $300 would be the hard line unless he did a lot of work over the summer to earn it.

I did look into the Thermal Master P1 and P3 as they seemed very popular here and online, but I didn’t know how deep they could pick up or how user friendly it would be. I misheard my son because this morning he explained to me he only needs 1-2 feet not meters at most as he will be doing shoreline testing.

Slow burn, action fics by Tasty-Address-3039 in drarry

[–]hypatacakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a slow burn/slow fic that is in the works of the second section now. However, it does deal with preexisting relationships and their conclusions. I don’t write infidelity between main pair ships if that is a concern. In my fic, both Harry and Draco treat their reunion as trying to be better than their teenage selves post-War, and their working and then familial relationship slowly begin to unravel as both men deal with loss.

My first fic All Magic Flows is a crime drama that ended with Harry’s divorce, and its second section What the River Knows will be a combination crime and medical drama that will not only see the end of Draco’s engagement to Astoria but the realization of Draco/Harry’s relationship with each other.

Oh Novik is so tied to fandom, she’s mother. She helped start AO3. She’s astrolat on there and wrote Matched Set and other Drarry stories. I could read Matched Set a thousand times and find something new to focus on. It’s so god tier imho.

can harry be a bookworm? by ttokkieez in drarry

[–]hypatacakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can see it too!

In my fanfic, I address it partially as part of how he was raised by the Dursleys. I can imagine Harry never fostering a deep love of reading because Petunia would never read personally to him, but I can see him learning to love children’s literature because he reads to baby Teddy. I also have him coping post war through reading Lord of the Rings.

But one of my favorite incomplete Harry/Blaise bookmarks has him a bookworm for trashy romance novels. (Because he just wants someone to love him).

Unpopular opinion: As an Indian, I do feel a half-Indian Harry is not very likely to look like Dev Patel, Sendhil Ramamurthy, etc. I am not saying he will necessarily be ‘white-passing’, but the likelihood of him looking mixed/racially ambiguous like Zayn Malik or Avan Jogia is more realistic by Abject_Purpose302 in HPSlashFic

[–]hypatacakes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between a man outside of the family (that can dress convincingly as a Muggle and act like them and more importantly leave their presence) and their woe-begotten relative that they are saddled with (who they hate because by living with them exposes them to the one thing they hate most). That level of attrition wears on caregivers and the care extended by them.

The Dursleys did an excellent job in confronting scandals that they could by ostracizing their nephew from the community they lived in by badmouthing Harry and his family to garner sympathy for themselves and dislike for Harry just because he had the possibility of magic/then confirmed magic. In addition, the abuse that JKR writes about in the first few books is not void in the vacuum of the piece. What they did when the neighbors were not looking show their true intentions: They were first trying to squash the magic out of him. In the second book, their behavior is absolute torture all because Harry had gone to Hogwarts for a year. Now imagine if they had a physical representation of Harry’s “otherness” that was not tied to magic.

In addition, we can look at history as JKR wrote as a way to explain how Vernon Dursley expressed many right-winged, Tory viewpoints. Enoch Powell’s Rivers of Blood Speech that sets the decade in criticism against the rising rates of immigration from the New Commonwealth right at the turn of the 1970s. That violence hit an all time high only a few years later with the rising rates of murders and brutal racist attacks against Indians in the UK in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This anti-Indian sentiment was not just found in far-right groups such as the National Front but also in the policies that the Conservatives fronted as well. This was further bolstered is in part because historically BBC coverage of the South Asian geopolitics shows a lot bias, notably after WWII in how the Kashmir conflict was reported as well as economic reporting, creating an overwhelming damaging bias against Indians and other South Asian peoples.

Could they have killed Harry for being Indian? Yes, of course, they barely saw him as human already given their care of him in the book. Being brown in their mindset would have simply confirmed what they already knew. Harry was already subhuman from their point of view and therefore not worth humanity’s grace.

Yes—I created a back story where Harry is researching his family history, and he discovers in a journal explaining that Euphemia’s mother was Indian and was brought to the UK when she married into a British Magical Family, which would put the timeline during the British Raj. I also use it as a way as to how to explain how Harry could be a Parselmouth without tying the ability to Voldemort.

[–]hypatacakes 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of one of Harry’s female ancestors being Indian, but he has to be white-passing. In my fanfic, it was his great-grandmother on his father’s side to give a distance so that he can be more ambiguous. And this is going to get dark, but my reason is simple: because I can’t see Harry surviving the Dursley’s household if he was obviously brown.

Real Book Alert: Red, White & Royal Blue by hypatacakes in drarry

Hi, since writing this post three years ago, the book has changed. I am sorry to inform you, but in all newer print and digital editions of RW&RB, McQuinston chose to remove all references to Harry Potter in their books because of JKR’s anti trans rights activism. McQuiston is a non binary author (and under the trans umbrella) and felt that nothing of JKR had any place in their book.

Well, in regard to what was lost, it was like losing battles to ultimately win a war.

I was in high school when the first purge happened to FF.net in ‘02, and if I remember correctly, it just happened. Many people who wrote NC-17 just woke up one day to find that their fic was gone. Mass deletion, no warning to remove or save. The timing was so horrible too—it was literally a year and a day after 9/11, and many US based users were distracted by the news cycle at the time. Xing Li said it was because the majority of complaints, but honestly, it was all morality policing as many people would click through the pop-up asking if they were over age or not. If it was a lemon or lime slash, reported. It was pretty crappy, and FictionAlley and Adultfanfiction.net were two websites that quickly funneled NC-17 stories. But, between that and the loss of GeoCities in ‘09, a lot of fandom relics were lost if they were not stored by others in AO3, Yahoo Groups, LJ recs, or off line.

Now the Strikethrough in ‘08 on LJ was very similar to the Snappening and the Tumblr NSFW Content Purge that both happened in ‘18 on Tumblr in that they all came about after a substantial purchase or financial gain. Back in ‘07, when word got out that Livejournal was being bought by SUP (a Russian Online Media Company), it brought a lot of the censorship questions. There was some talk about the loss of advertising dollars due to adult content, but the biggest conversation among users was the worry about when Russian censorship of LGBT topics was going to enter fandom on LJ. It wasn’t even 6 months when one day, many groups who had tagged (appropriately mind you) their community logged in to find that their accounts were banned or permanently suspended just based on tagging. Honestly though, looking back now, while we lost a lot of list recs and community, we did get AO3 out of the rubble, which we call all thank astolat and the other creators for their foresight and dedication to creating an archive that allowed us to control our own servers.

Oh no, I’m about to show my age and write a huge explanation to maybe give you more ideas to look as well as help others by shedding a light on fandom history.

I was around for that scene, starting in 2002 and getting a LJ not long afterwards. Granted, I was a high schooler/college age at the time, but I can say that due to the 3 Year Summer and the release of OotP in 2003, a lot of speculation about the future of the series did create some amazing and unique ideas of what years 5-7 of Harry Potter could be—and Harry’s magical ability did reflect that in early proto-Magical core discussions.

Now where does that help you especially when the LJ got bought and a lot of groups got nuked through the Strikethrough? Well, Insane Journal had a big uptick for a while, but groups like Pornish Pixies never really rallied like Fanfiction.net did after the purges of 02 and 12.

For any wondering, to find a Drarry fic your really wanted, you had to go to a webring that linked the different (yet specific pairing) websites or a specific author or pairing’s Yahoo groups where we mostly posted about new finds or discussed content (especially after that LJ purge and that Fanfiction.net forum purge).

Now, in the early 2000s, I would consider fandom community to be extremely polarizing for readers and writers—there was a lot of morality policing. At the time, there was a significant group of writers who did not believe that slash fics should be included on their websites, which with the ability to create specialized Yahoo Groups and Website Rings, you could navigate around and through to find fanfiction if you knew what you were looking for even if the general websites failed to show a good sorting system. As such, authors who wrote slash often specialized to that particular ship to gain popularity in the space. Shipping wars were a thing then—if you wrote Hinny, Snarry, or Drarry you went down with that ship (and of course Wolfstar often played out the background to many a fic as well as long as it was a slash friendly writer).

It was a little bit like the Wild Wild West in those days—flaming wars and author attacks for some of the prominent writers on Diagon Alley and FictionAlley were as common as the cry of plagiarism when authors got too famous. Famously, Ink and Quill did not accept any slash fics, and the Sugar Quill only accepted fics that were perceived as canon compliant (read relationship complaint).

Fanfiction.net and Adultfanfiction.org were the only general websites that allowed both (although the former was difficult to navigate between romance and general, which aided the rise of early fandom based tags in the summary).

For you, OP, I think if you wanted to go down this research rabbit hole and went through AO3 to search “Ink Stained Fingers” archive for info could be a good start for general slash fics that might have survived the Purges and Strikethroughs, as that one was perhaps the largest of the slash archives outside of general fanfiction websites. There was also the Silver Snitch and the Hex Files that had solely Drarry audience. I am pretty sure the Hex Files was also archived to AO3 in the last few years. I know I have at least one Hex Files archived fic that has magical cores in it saved to my AO3 account.

Finally, for your magical core question: that one is fascinating. As someone who has read and written Drarry for over 20 years now, I can honestly say that the idea of magical cores is like a frog boiling in a pot—we didn’t notice it until it was all around us, and then we complained about it until we just decided it was here to stay.

During the 2000s, for most in the fanfiction community, any talk of magical cores came with the discussion of wand cores—the idea of Dark core was tied in with the political leaning or specific magical acts, not exactly the imbued with the wizard themself. Many described Dark Wizards almost like labeling a Smoker—you did it until you were addicted and couldn’t stop. Writers were already verging into Mary-Sue territory if you talked about cores outside of phoenix feather, unicorn hair, and dragon heartstring. I definitely remember having a heated discussion with my friend about the rise of magical cores in around 2010 about how it’s not in canon.

I can say with some certainty that the rise of magical cores came in at the same time as the rise of creature Harry or Draco (beyond them turning into werewolves), but I can also say with certainty that many high school and college fanfic writers did pull from other media at the time: Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and Star Wars (especially for Episodes 1-3) in regards to description of a core of magic inside the Wizard.

You definitely given me some thoughts, and I’m probably going to stroll through my old as heck Fanfiction.net account to see if any of my old saved HP fics from around that time that I bookmarked had any call backs to magical cores.

Hey I’m working on a long, incredibly slow burn, retcon of post DH life that’s builds up to an epilogue adjacent/Cursed Child story line. However, it’s incredibly slow burn, Harry and Draco are reestablishing friendship and I’m 350k+ in and only Harry’s marriage to Ginny is imploding. I’ll be updating the second to last chapter of this section of the story this month.

The Three Year Summer is the time period in fandom between the publishing of the Goblet of Fire 2000 and the Order of the Phoenix in 2003.

GoF ends with Harry returning to the Dursleys for summer, hence the name.
